Batch POI download utility available

PoiSync is a utility that allows you to download a set of POI files from POI Factory in batch mode. This allows you to periodically synchronize/update all your POI files at once.

The utility for batch download POI files is now available for download at

http://www.nextgenlogic.com/poi.php

To install, unzip to a directory. The documentation is in both text and html and can be found in the directory named doc.

Thanks to all the beta users and the valuable feedback. A special thanks to mobajwa for hosting the download.

Batch vs. UI

Hi Phil,

That is a good point. I never intended the UI to replace the batch functionality. The UI is intended to complement the batch function, so you can manage, and test your control files. For scheduling etc, the intent was still to use the batch utility for the reason that the batch interface is lighter weight, and for scheduling, loading the UI only slows things down.

Thanks for bringing this up. The documentation probably does not make this distinction very clear.

How do I write text into poifiles.txt to move bmp's and mp3's from a saved location (safe location) to the poi folders at the same time I run PoiSync download.

"[RLC] C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\"
"file:///C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\\Redlight-Beta.csv C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Cameras - Redlight Beta.csv"
"file:///C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\\Redlight-Cameras.csv C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Cameras - Redlight.csv"
"file:///C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\\Speed-Cameras.csv C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Cameras - Speed.csv"

I've tried adding this next line after above lines.

"file:///C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\\Redlight-Beta.bmp C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Cameras - Redlight Beta.bmp"
"file:///C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Temp\\Redlight-Beta.mp3 C:\MyPOIs\Garmin\Cameras - Redlight Beta.mp3"

I don't get a copy in the move to folder.

You're on the right track. Try file:///c:/MyPOIs/Garmin/Temp/Redlight-Beta.bmp as the URL. The URL syntax uses the "/" instead of "\" for path separator and that should work. So the prepend "///" in front of c:, and change each "\" to "/".

Having said that, I'll need to take a look at what to do with the blanks in your path. That may confuse the control file parsing code. So the paths that don't contain blanks will work, but I think I'll need to put out a fix for paths that contain blanks.

I'll do a little testing and let you know.

Updated:

URL syntax does not allow blanks. Blanks should be escaped with %20. So "Document and Settings" should be "Document%20and%20Settings". If you open the file in your browser, and then copy and paste, you would get the escape characters.

I think I'll update the UI in the future to do the substitution automatically.

Batch POI

Great - Thanks will save a lot of time.

Update available

Latest version is available at

http://www.nextgenlogic.com/poi.php

The RLC file link is no longer a zip file, and this version handles the link properly by parsing the page and download each file individually. If you've been having problems downloading the RLC file by using the [RLC] macro, this version should fix the problem

Great

Thanks, as always

3.0?

Site says its version 3.0 but the version.txt file in the zip file says its PoiSync 2.0.120100425

version is 2.0.1

The version displayed on the site is wrong due to a communication error when I released the last version. I'll send another email to see if that can be corrected.

Is this tool still available

The link to download this seems to be dead. Is this still available for download anywhere?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Well, I am using version 2.0.1 I believe. It works great. Here I zip it & upload it for you to download. All you need to do is make your own poi-files.txt of your choice. Let us know if there is any issue(s).

Questions

Question 1 of 2

Shouldn't the download be hosted on a more permanent location than MediaFire or MegaUpload?

Question 2 of 2

Will you update the software further?

Terrific User Interface

Strephon_Alkhalikoi wrote:

Question 2 of 2

POIsync is a terrific user interface, it's outstanding. I download 100 poi files from this site in 4-5 minutes. While performing download it will rename file and place them inside multiple directories of your choosing. It copies mp3s, wav and icons to those same directories. I find it easiest to delete old main directory and allow it to rebuild the main directory each time and as I stated above it does all this in 4-5 minutes.

It will require building the poifile.txt file but you will only needs to do this once or whenever you add to it.

I'm very happy using POIsync.

hosting and update

1. As for hosting, I don't have a publicly available host at my disposal. It was hosted by another member of this site.

2. I have not had any major bug reports or enhancement requests, so it has not been updated recently. I use it myself to update my POI files, so if there are suggestions to make it better, I'd be happy to look into it.

great idea

somehow missed this utility - thanks, I'll give it a try

What happened to the download location? Has it been moved?

Jeff

Hmmmm

If schumans doesnt mind I can host it locally for a while. I have a spare linux box that I use to host small stuff like this. I sent a note to him seeking approval.

Could email you a copy if needed.

Hi Schuman
If its not to much trouble for your next version update, could you modify the %%date%% to add system date as YYYY-MMDD
Thanks

I think I'll add the ability for you to control the date formatting. So in addition to %%date%%, maybe %%year%, %%month%% and %%day%% so you can have more control over formatting and order.

Other enhancements in the works for next release are:
- encrypting user/password file
- download and expand zip file
- synchronizing from local file system

You are an angel for putting up with all the requested changes to your program when all you wanted to do is make it easier for the users to download POI files. I hope you are at least getting donations for all your hard work.

I did at least snag the Megaload link, but agreed, this does need a permanent-ish host...

Sorry about that

All good--figured a connection got cut or power failure occured (have dealt with this myself...). Guess I have the worst timing in the world. :3

Thank you. I also look forward to using this program.

Editing of control file is needed

Editing of control file is needed because of POI factory site location change.

replace ".com/poifile/download/csv?node=" and ".com/poifile/download/gpx?node="

with ".net/node/"

Thus
http://www.poi-factory.com/poifile/download/csv?node=12311 c:\poisync\test\Coffee shops\Starbucks.csv

would become:
http://www.poi-factory.net/node/12311 c:\poisync\test\Coffee shops\Starbucks.csv

Note that the old link is still active but I wonder if the data will be updated on the old site.

This morning the changes I made did not work because the site is back to .com

I deleted my poifiles.txt file that I revised yesterday and renamed my poifiles-save.txt file to poifiles.txt and am back to where I was.

Sorry about making my post- I thougnt the .net domain name change was going to be permanent and it turns out that it was not.

I would have been better off if I had gone to bed and covered my head all day friday. smile

download fail with -1

One of the user reported a problem that some files fail to download with a code of -1. I was able to reproduce his problem. After a bit of debugging, it seems that intermittently download requests are getting invalid responses back from the site, but if I try the request again, it usually works.

Has anyone else seen this. If you are seeing this and would like to try a test fix, send me an email.

Hi Gastx, please email me if you're interested in putting the latest version out there. A couple of minor fixes, one of which I described above.

thanks,

I have this -1 error as well

Hi schumans,

I have the same error "-1" with 2 of my files and only with these two files. I tried re-downloading the files a couple of times but resulted in the same errors.

Here's the link to the files:

I will send you an email with the same info
Thanks!

Thank you both

Many thanks to schumans for making and updating poisync and to Gastx for providing a means for us to download it.

I got the –1 error only once, it did not reappear again although I have downloaded all the same files several times since the time I got the error.

But I will download the update anyway when Gastx makes it available.
