Batch POI download utility available

PoiSync is a utility that allows you to download a set of POI files from POI Factory in batch mode. This allows you to periodically synchronize/update all your POI files at once.

The utility for batch download POI files is now available for download at

http://www.nextgenlogic.com/poi.php

To install, unzip to a directory. The documentation is in both text and html and can be found in the directory named doc.

Thanks to all the beta users and the valuable feedback. A special thanks to mobajwa for hosting the download.

I look forward to using this software.

Thanks!

Thanks!

THANKS for the new utility!

This should help simplify an update of favorite POI files to the gps after revisions are made to the POI Factory files. Greatly appreciated!

Output path

Could there be a change to allow the output path to contain spaces? Usually double quotes around paths with spaces takes care of this situation but does not work with this utility.

Example: C:\GPS POIS\Walmart US.cvs does not work because of the spaces.

This would help me a lot too, most of my directories have spaces.

Thanks,

blanks in path or file name

Looks like one of my "fixes" broke this. I'll post out here when the fix is available.

schumans wrote:

Hi Schuman
I'm using XP NTSF, when download finalizes, file name will be first word with no extension. Also files with same names and different extensions overwrite. I tried 'my file'.csv, 'my file.csv', "my file".csv, and "my file.csv", the utility will not download complete file name and extension if it has spaces between words, The utility doesn't show this error during download. As discussed earlier the files download using underscore between words.

I agree, implement some sort of macro where file and/or folder name, can have date added during download using format _YYYYMMDD, time stamp isn't needed.

I would prefer a selectable command to merge new files with existing files, most members are using TurboCCC's program for that.

You asked why my data is writen to Gdrive, my utility copy is currently on a thumb drive which mounts as G drive on home computer with partitioned hard drive and two dvd drives.

Thanks for this light weight easy program.

I entered the Username & password mnually. I even created a text file in c:\mydir\mylogin.txt with 2 lines.

This works for me, create a temporary poiFiles.txt file, paste below line in file, this line has quotes remove them and remember this is one line, no other lines in file, save the file, run utility, when complete look for the file at c:\MyPOIs.

"http://www.poi-factory.com/poifile/download/csv?node=2661 C:\MyPOIs\Offbeat_Tourist_Attractions_US.csv"

If this download is successful, the error could be something your writing.

Yes, it works with your suggestion.

The only thing I am thinking of is re-naming the files.

e.g. Offbeat_Tourist_Attractions_US.csv

is different from

Offbeat Tourist Attractions.csv (This is how I renamed them in my POI folder)

For instance, Costco_USA_Canada.csv is the original file we download from the site. I renamed it to just "Costco.csv" that makes it so clear in my GPS instead of Underscores and Long Names.

Here is a screen shot of my POIs names in my folder.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/4292/mypoifiles.jpg

It seems I must have the Original name of the files in my folder in order for the utility to work.

Let me know unless there is something I need to be aware of.

Thanks for the reply.

POI Batch Update Utility

Good afternoon, everyone, and a belated "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!",

This is great news, and should prove to be a valuable utility to have around. I'm downloading it now.

GOOD YOU GOT IT WORKING

I prefer my files with spaces between names. There is a new version of the utility which is supposed to allow you to download file names with spaces, haven't tried it yet because it won't run on work computer.

I didn't need an existing file in the folder to download the same file, in fact what I was doing was deleting the entire file and allowing the utility to creat new folder and files each step I tried. Actually don't know if file overwrites existing file or renumbers file with a 1 or two as it may appear as copy to the utility.

I was able to get the mylogin.txt to work just fine.
Phil

download error

Hi kmo,

From the screenshot, you've logged in successfully. Looks like it is having problem with your control file - poiFiles.txt.

Can you verify that in poiFiles.txt that the URL and the file path are on the same line, separated by a space? Also, the version that is out there right now has a bug that doesn't handle blanks in file or directory name, so you'll have to name your file something like AceToHardware.csv or Ace_to_hardware.csv. A fix is on the way.

If it still doesn't work, send me an email with your poiFiles.txt and I'll take a look at it.

I am the Error

The folder and file do not have to exist for the utility to work. If the folder/directory does not exist, it will be created. If a file does not exist, it will be created. If it exists, it will be overwritten.

I rename my files like you do in a lot of cases.

The more feedback we have

The more feedback we have the better software the author can modify for us.

Thanks Phil.

Because I like to rename POI files with my own preferences.

Fixed?

I downloaded this just a couple of minutes ago and I'm running into the problem with the spaces in the directory also. In my fixlog.txt it says that "1.0.1 Fixed failure when more than 1 blanks are present between URL and file path." I have version 1.0.2 so I shouldnt be running into this problem...right? Im guessing there is probably a nother version that shuman is going to release shortly. Anyways, just let me know. I'd love to use this! Awesome program!!!

Renaming files

Hi kmo,

There should not be any problems renaming files. I rename the files I download as well. Can you post an example entry that is not working?

Fixed?

Hi dgwood12,

The version at the download site is still 1.0.2. Email me at schumanshao@gmail.com for the fixed version. I don't have my own hosting service so it may take time before the new version get to the web site.

Its Working Great

Hi Schuman
Version 1.0.3 runs properly, file names download as target file asks, e.g. with spaces, with underscores, with date as YYYYMMDD, didn't download with time stamps. I find the folder naming option most useful, it can be used to separate files by extension and/or date

Anyone having trouble using the utility open the html file in doc folder, click java link, click verify latest compatible java for your computer (about mid page of right), the next screen will tell your good or give your the download you need.

Thanks

Posting your Latest File

schumans wrote:

No worries about you don't have your own hosting to post the latest updated file. I would suggest use free hosting sites like MegaUpload or Rapidshare till you can upload it to your friend's site. It saves time in emailing for you to all users. Just post the LINK for us to download in this thread.

I like MegaUpload better. Now a day Rapidshare has no slots available for Free user most of the time.

I will send you zip file ( my POI Files) later.

Thanks again for the great tool & support.

I think I'll add the ability for you to control the date formatting. So in addition to %%date%%, maybe %%year%, %%month%% and %%day%% so you can have more control over formatting and order.

Other enhancements in the works for next release are:
- encrypting user/password file
- download and expand zip file
- synchronizing from local file system

Awesome

Are you sure you are running Widows? smile

Download the POISync zip file from http://www.nextgenlogic.com/poi.php

Unzip it by using a tool like 7-Zip, Winzip or Winrar.

Look at the Picture here:

http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/8809/poisynchilighted.jpg

The .bat file is High Lighted. That's the file you need to run.

Go to : Start > RUN > Type NOTEPAD > Click on OK

Save your file in the POISYNC folder and name it to poifiles.txt

A sample of my control file poifiles.txt is posted here.

Mine doesnt have the ' ms

Mine doesnt have the ' ms dos batch' file under the poisync, like yours does. Otherwise, my extraction appears just like yours. How did you get the .txt file into the .bat file. I cant even see a .bat file.
When I click on the poisync file, it brings up a dos window that says...poifiles.text not found..press any key to continue. Then when I press a key, it all goes away.

Because you haven't created poifiles.txt yet. This is why POISYN gave you that error.

Rename the included file poiFiles-sample.txt to poiFiles.txt and run POISync again.

Then look for your files under c:\poisync\test in your computer.

Windows Vista has UAC (User Access Control).

I guess you must run the program as Admin

Right Click on the poisync.bat file & run as administrator I guess.

Enter your user name then hit enter.
Enter password then hit enter.

See what happens.

The instruction file is in the doc folder of the poisync.
