Lifetime traffic to unit or cable?

Would appreciate if someone could point me to the answer. I've been searching this site to see if someone asked this before but cannot seem to find an answer.

I have a 265T with a receiver cable. Lifetime traffic.

I'm noticing a lot of Garmin units are going on sale but with the MSN service with x months. Same mini-usb connector.

Naturally if the traffic is linked to the 265T, then I could not just swap cables with the new unit say a 285WT. It looks like I'd need to buy I saw on amazon a GTM25 cable ( linked to the cable ) which I'd just rather pass on. If it all worked out, I'd be passing on the 265T to family.

Thanks all.

It'e the receiver

not the unit

The subscription services

The subscription services are associated with the receiver (the cable) and not the GPS unit. You should be able to take a GXM30, FM Traffic receiver, etc. and plug it into any Garmin GPS that supports that function/receiver and it'll work.

For example. Some units support MSN or FM Traffic. A GXM30 won't work with that unit. The old StreetPilots supported XM Traffic and FM Traffic. The MSN unit wouldn't work in that case.

Just to clarify...

So my existing Garmin 265T comes with an ( unknown model cable ) FM receiver cable. FM traffic compatible per Garmin site.

I was looking at the Garmin 285WT comes with the GDB55 cables for MSN ( 9 month ) but this Garmin is FM traffic compatible per Garmin's site. Not sure why its considered discontinued so have to look more.

So I could swap cables and get the 285WT with the FM traffic and give my older 265T with the MSN cable away.

Have to do a little more research but thanks. And if someone spots something wrong with this setup - feel free to comment.

MSN direct

The 285WT is discontinued because the MSN Direct traffic service is going away in Jan. 2012. I believe your 265T comes with the GTM 25 cable which supports both Navteq and Clear Channel traffic subscriptions.

As other said

As other said, the service is to the cable. However, for MSN, the service level also related to the Unit software. The newer unit has more services built-in the GPS software than older generation of GPS even though you paid the same rate.
