2010.30 Extracting problem

Hello, I'm trying to update my nuvi 680 to the latest nüMaps Lifetime™ North America 2010.30. I've downloaded the file two times. Once using Firefox and the second time using the Garmin downloader. Both times downloaded successfully but when I execute the file, nothing happens. It just says 0% Extracting Garmin Map Update and sits at 0% for over 1 hour. I've tried updating in Windows XP and Vista and nothing happens. I've even turned off the virus checker and Windows Firewall. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Free disk space.

on C: drive. Do you have enough? It can take up to 6 GB including temporary space.

.

And it can take an extremely long time to extract and start doing something.

.

Yes, I have 8GB free on C drive and 48GB free on all other drives. I didn't have a problem updating to 2010.20 on my laptop before and there was less than 4GB free on it. I've tried on two different computers already and 2010.30 just won't extract.

.

The notes said up to 40 minutes to do something on a Vista or Windows 7 machine. I've been sitting here over 2 hours now and still nothing. I've got a quad core PC with 4GB of RAM, you'd think it would move from 0% by now.

UAC

Try turning off UAC (User Account Control) on vista. Note that this will require a reboot.

Acccording to Garmin

10 GB free disk space for initial installation; 2 GB disk space after installation.

Would that be the problem confused

I disabled UAC long time ago and am running the file as administrator. I have the file on a different drive. The notes say up to 6GB required on C. I have 8 free as is. If space was a problem, you'd think you'd get a warning. I will make drive C 10GB free now...I doubt it will make a difference.

.

Ok, I have 20GB free on drive C. Rebooted computer. Running the file with UAC off and as administrator. I've set the file garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_30.exe *32 (7z Setup SFX) to real time and affinity to all 4 CPU's using Windows Task Manager and it's still only using 0% of my CPU (thus it is doing nothing). The Garmin unit is plugged in and is registering on the Garmin website. At this point, I don't know what else to do so I'm going to leave the computer on over night now.

install

Sounds like you have done all the troubleshooting steps. The other thing you could try to do is manually extract using winrar, then run setup. I have never had to use this method myself, but have read of others who have had to.

WinRar

Thanks for everyone's help. It is greatly appreciated. I will give the Winrar method a try. Happy New Year to all.

.

I decided to download the file for a 3rd time on a 3rd computer. I thought it might not be compatible with AMD machines so now it's on an Intel machine. Still no luck. I tried the Winrar method but Winrar doesn't recognize the file either. I give up now... waiting for Garmin support to reply back or until the next update comes out.

downloading the map update

Try to download and save the file to your computer using Internet Explorer. If your using Firefox I think it tries to uncompress the file when you download it.

You will also need to download and install the Garmin Web update tool from the Garmin web page.

Connect the GPS unit and double click the file to install the map update.

Past experience

My past experience is that the extract has to be done on the target drive. In the past this meant everything had to be on the C drive. I've tried running it from an external drive and even a 4G flash and it won't install unless everything is done from C:.

No problem with Firefox........

I didn't have any problem using Firefox. I'm not sure that should be a problem.

I've already given up with this update until I get a reply from Garmin. Tried it on 3 different computers, downloaded it 3 times, using both Firefox and Explorer and the Garmin Downloader. I even burnt the file onto a DVD and tried installing from there. Nothing happens even when I remove the DVD after executing the file... it's not even accessing the file after the Garmin extracting screen comes up. Doing the exact same thing I did when I installed 2010.20 without luck.

You are certain

You are absolutely certain that you are extracting the file onto the same C: drive the downloaded file is on?

You cannot extract the file from one drive and have the object reside on another. It has to be the C: drive. That has been my experience in the past.

I ran into something similar when I updated to 2010_30. First I was told that I needed to download and install an update to Garmin's Communicator. Did that and the update failed to install, bad file. 2nd download installed okay.

Over 2 hours downloading the map update and when I double clicked on it the extraction started then errored out after about 10%. Rebooted the computer, same thing. Another 2 hour download and this one worked. Then a 2 hour install to the GPS.

All told, it took most of the day to update the map in my 750. I may skip the next update.

It sounds like you did everything you could to do the update. I think they have a bad server that is messing up the file or it is being corrupted while crossing the Internet, it is a huge file. They need to add CRC values to file sections and error checking to their communicator.

2010.30 extraction problem

One thing I have found on some downloaded files, check the properties of the file for a security block. If there is one, check unblock, the file can be used.

install problems

When i tried to do my update it just sat there doing nothing for about a hour, and the some one suggested that the firewall was locking it out. so i disabled the windows firewall and still nothing. So it clicked on me that Norton had a firewall also, so when i shut off the norton firewall it went on to the install. might try disableing the anti virus firewall an try it

I just got myself another

I just got myself another computer (this is the 5th one now). Did myself a complete new install of Windows 7 Ultimate (now I've tried XP, Vista, Vista 64 and Windows 7). No other software installed including firewalls and virus checkers. It still sits there and does nothing at 0%. There's got to be a server problem on Garmin's side.

2010.30 extracting problem

I did the whole procedure yesterday afternoon, too about two hours all told.thru Garmin for a 255 ,no prpblems. I had 160 gb free on my hard drive. I did my own 260 a few month ago , was painless.

2010.30 Extracting Problem

I updated my 760 and yesterday my daughter's 250 with no problems. Intel Pentium 4 running Windows XP Pro fully updated, and IE 8.
There is more than 150 gig free on the drive, with one partition on one drive. I guess a_user might be right about extracting between drives, but my first choice is the free space on the drive.

Just wanted to update

Just wanted to update everyone and thank them for all their help. 2010.30 was no good for me. I tried on like 8 different computers, was getting sick of redownloading it every time. Anyhow, since 2010.40 came out recently, I downloaded it and it installed just fine. Must have been a bug in 2010.30.

Extracting

I just downloaded 2010.40, and at the begining of the download, Garmin is giving a "Notice" that the launching may take up to 40 minutes. That is for Vista, and Windows 7.

Long Download and Setup

When downloading 2010.30, using a high speed fiber connection and USB 2 to the GPS, the complete process for my 760 took 3 to 4 hours.

You may have indeed used a USB 2 port but the 7x0 series USB speed is only USB 1.1 so you'll get map transfer speeds to the unit at only USB 1.1 speed.

One a side note, I've briefly used a nuvi 1690 and when transferring maps to/from the unit, I got the impression that the same, slow USB 1.1 is still being used on the entire 1xxx series as well.

How Garmin can continue to use such antiquated hardware such as USB 1.1 on brand new units released in 2009/2010 is really a mystery...but is also something they've done in the past as well.
