I have a new 255WT and was wondering how to get it to display the remaining distance in miles on the screen after I have entered an address and am on my way?
Thanks for any help as I must be missing some setting?

Nuvi 750
I have a nuvi 750 and if I touch the bottom left corner button, speed button I think, it will tell you a lot of information, including the distance to go.
Don't know if yours has the same feature but it probably does.

I use Gary Hayman's site like a second manual. Lots of good stuff.

Gary's Site
I just found this site yesterday (got my first Garmin from my wife for Christmas) and so far it's made the experience on a garmin much better than my old GPS.
Yes, Gary has a lot of fun
Yes, Gary has a lot of fun and important information-- maybe he should have made the original Garmen book-- !

Missing on Main Map Display
Yes, I wish Garmin can show remaining distance like other GPS on the main map screen.
I have Navigon & MIO Moov also. Both units show Remaining Distance, Time to go , Estimate Time of Arrival, Current traveling Speed, Altitude & Compass on the Navigating map Screen. I like that feature since you know how far you have to go.

Funny you mentioned that - I
Funny you mentioned that - I complained about that just a couple of days ago myself: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26558
.
For the past 5 years Garmin has been 'dumbing down' their consumer navigators, making them less and less configurable, while adding lots of what I call 'fluff' in the form of features like 3DE view, Garmin Locate and so on.
Keep in mind that while the GPSMAP 276 has been out there for almost 5 years, it is relatively expensive and the consumer navigators cost very little and are rotated out of the product line up in less than six months, such is the competition.
I strongly suspect that Garmin's motives are simply to make tings easier to crank out, and simpler for the average user . . . the more 'stuff' they put in the product, the more complicated the device becomes and the more support calls they receive.
If you'd like to have more basic information, and would like it to be configurable, you might want to consider a navigator like the GPSMAP 478. Or you might want to consider buying a Streetpilot 2720 or 2820 and an NOH or used device.
But while these units offer amazing displays and so on, the GPSMAP 276/478 are not imbued with touchscreens and that alone can make things difficult. The GPS 640 is a close, albeit expensive alternative in today's market - and Garmin's made some very significant changes that reduces that unit's appeal to the landlubbers among us.
Many among us who have been using navigators since their inception as a consumer technology about 10 years ago would more than gladly hand our fancy Audible book players, Garmin Locks, 3D and the junction views and so on back to Garmin in return for the quality (and density) of display and the configurability of the device that the 478 and it's sister units (for example) deliver.
By the way, the Zumo series' two data fields (lower left & right) are user configurable to display from a number of parameters and offer some pretty unjique features; However they are more like extended Nuvis than they are the older GPSMAP devices - plus, of course they are expensive.
Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T
You can do this
You can do this on the Nuvi 1490 and probably all the 1xxx Nuvi line. By turning on the enhanced map data layout options (Tools - Map - "press the down arrow" - Map Data Layout). Then you can list any 3 of the following 6 items along with your current speed, on the mapscreen:
-estimated time of arrival
-distance to destination
-estimated time to destination
-direction of travel
-elevation
-time of day
Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.
Because There's POI Factory
It's not necessary. POI Factory will tell you everything you need to know.
The techies at Garmin know too much about their product and cannot think like a user anymore.
I had a supplier who would hire engineering students to write the manual for his product because they knew nothing about it. Therefore they wrote it for a customer who had seen it for the first time.
