Once the Snohomish County Council members are given the money that the red light cameras will generate at no cost to them, the RFP will go out and the cameras will be installed asap.
For those Cities that want to install red light cameras. Would it be possible to threaten them with law suits like the ones that was done on nativity displays?
I think it's hilarious how you hear on the news that:
* "We're thinking about it to increase safety"
* "We're doing this on a trial basis"
* "We're not sure these will ever go live"
And then shortly afterwards:
"We've decided to start mailing you tickets"
As if they ever really considered it being temporary. I don't actually mind from a safety perspective because red light runners are a menace, but it makes you feel yet again that you are nothing more than a piggy bank to be cracked open to fund the government coffers.
If you do not normally run a red light then their is nothing to worry about. The only time they are really a menace is for those that think they can make it then suddenlly the yellow show up and they slam on the breaks. If you are from the area and drive the route regularlly you should know the timing of the light to begin with.
Just like when the fines for a speeding ticket gets raised. If you do not speed you have nothing to worry about.
Myself I like the red light cameras. Those that are getting caught or causing the accident are generally, not always, the ones trying to beat the light anyway. They need to be caught. And maybe they would slow down they could stop safer and less chance of an accident happening.
Now if everyone obeyed the law and did not speed or run the red lights we would not need such laws and devices to give anyone a fine for breaking the law.

Just think, if we were a police state, strict adherence to the law could be raised to the level of religious edict. In this ideal world, the State would represent the omnipotent being which demands submission through the sacrificial act of taxation along with sure punishment for the unrepentant scofflaws who disobey its edicts. Of course, this is satire…
I do believe in rule of law as opposed to anarchy but history has shown and as some religions have acknowledged, it’s part of our nature as fallible beings that try as we might we cannot completely abide by strict adherence to law.
There are many reasons contributory to fatal or near fatal accidents including such things as equipment failure and operator error. Statistically, accidents will continue to occur regardless of whether all people who roll through a red light or speed one or two miles over the speed limit are apprehended. Aggressive zero tolerance enforcement of traffic regulatory laws will not create a utopia of safety.
Certainly, special cases do occur which are deemed to be criminal in that there is intent behind the deed, such things as driving under the influence or excessive speeding, actions that must be reduced due to the real threat they pose.
But, it’s my contention that driving is primarily dangerous due to the number of autonomous drivers of various abilities who surround you on the road. So, how do you account for the human factor which includes physiological, mental or other causes leading to such things as lapses in attention or decreased reaction time consequent to age?
Perhaps if we approached this as a public health issue and reacted accordingly we’d see real improvement rather than the guise of such. For starters, we should reexamine license requirements and the easy means of obtaining the license. For example, in many states there already is a graduated system of licensing for the least experienced but most impulsive drivers. This program has led to the marked reduction of fatal accidents.
One thing to keep in mind is the intense lobbying these companies do to get and keep their cameras installed. You have to remember the companies are for profit entities, and they just share the spoils of the cameras with the cities.
One of the local papers did a study of RLC locations here and found an increase in accidents where the cameras were installed, not a decrease.

Yep...
You're the typical "don't speed or run the red light" type of person who only sees things as black or white.. with no shades of gray in between.
I can show you several different ways that you might have technically "run a red light" or have been "speeding", yet it was through no fault of your own.
It's too bad you're unable to see situations from the opposite point of view.

Must be an upcoming election.

Uninstall them! Instead, backward timers should be there if they really concern about safety. My 0.02 Cents.

Texas 2 Step...
TEXAS Voters voted to REMOVE Redlight Cameras in the the last election and as I PREDICTED many other cities will follow.
I DISAGREE!!!
When a family member is KILLED by a reckless driver it changes the FRAME of the camera!
REDLIGHT CAMERAS are NOT a threat to those who OBEY the law...
