problem with GPS/google vs state route addresses (not found)

The GPS may not recognize that road as "Route 3"? The only thing I could think of is to find out what other name that road is recognized as.

so far found out that google finds "Route 3" in New Jersey as "NJ-3". perhaps this is how GPS would find it too (don't have it handy at the moment) ...

The difference is Route 3 is the local name, but NJ-3 is the official name.

You've found one of those places that doesn't "map" well. Google Earth names the road as New Jersey 3, but doesn't seem to understand addresses along it. Street & Trips accepts the address as posted and displays the correct spot but names it as 395 SR-3. If you plug in 395 Clifton Commons, Clifton, NJ into Google Earth it comes back as 395 NJ-3 East, Clifton, NJ... But if you plug that in as a search, it takes you someplace else!

The closest I can locate using MapSource is 622 Highway 3. It appears it doesn't recognize any street numbers lower than that one.

For what it's worth, Bing Maps nails it the 1st time.

ive been having the same problem

When entering a highway number I find it is best to just enter the number for the highway in the street field, for example "3" not "Route 3".

Entering 3 for the street my 255W returned 395 Hwy 3, Clifton, New Jersey 07014.

good point! i will try it next time. perhaps my bad was using words like "route" "highway" or abbreviations with a number. definitely will try putting only number next time. thanks!

You may want to try a 'Search All' to see what the unit gives for options.

Google maps are out of date by about 4 or 5 years. The image you see on a PC is an image that was taken by a satellite some years ago and stored in their data base.

Yahoo maps and Bing maps are much better, but still out of date.

I look up addresses like this all the time (using only the number) and it always finds the road. Makes it easier too. Dont have to worry about figuring out if it's Rt 206, CR206, State Highway 206, US 206, etc. Just type in 206 fo r the street name.

I would say Google Map is most up-to-date compare with Bing. I check number of new construction Road in Bing is still showing the old before construction Road but Google Map up-to-date with new construction.

I can find it, but not get to it by an address

Using the coordinates, my 765T will actually give me an icon (looks like a square brown block) that says that it is a "Barnes & Noble".

I set my state city to New Jersey & Clinton. I entered 395 as my street number. I tried all of the suggested ways above. Just 3 - got no matches found. Tried 'route" and Hwy - same thing.

Funny thing, some of the icons are a "3" in a rounded corner rectangle. If I touch one of those is will give me something like "366 Hwy 3" - so the road is clearly known as "Hwy 3" but won't let use enter that as an address.

This is clearly a bug, especially since I looked for a POI "near" Clinton, NJ spelled "Barnes" and got a bunch - none of which were on Hwy 3.

Indeed, Interesting that using only 3 gave me two choices "3" and "3rd St". Selecting "3" got to Hwy 3, so wonder why "choices were not "Hwy 3 " and "3rd St".

In Mapsource, searching for 3 in Clifton,NJ returns 3, US 3 and Hwy 3, which then all resolve to Hwy 3 (the actual street name shown on the map).

395 Hwy 3 and 395 3rd St are the only two unique addresses for streets starting with 3 that have address 395 in Clifton,NJ.

... you could just look up the store in the POI Factory Barnes & Noble file.

It even shows up in the built-in POIs on my Nuvi. That almost NEVER happens!

Yeah, trying lots of variations I eventually figured out that just putting in the number seems to work best on my C340. Anything else just confuses it.

hehe, i started having some success stories here too with putting just number for any highways, state route and all of those "numbered" roads.

I also downloaded tons of POI files with places I visit and that work very well too.
