I would like to know how the Navteq traffic reports work.
Where does Navteq gather their info from; do they get the reports from the Highways Dept. or radio stations or what.
Do they have their own FM transmission stations? I can't see them opening their own station in every city you get a traffic report from.

Most of the data comes from sensors either in the road or along side the road. Some are installed by the traffic report company, some by the city/state. The reports are sent to one of their partner stations where it is sent out on a subcarrier frequency of an operating FM station.

Some time ago I got into a serious traffic jam (Garmin was showing green no traffic icon) when i noticed that a highway advisory road sign started flashing. a few seconds later Garmin updated traffic status to red icon with several minutes of a delay.
