Need help with Battery Status on nuvi 8xx

When I start my Garmin, I see the battery status, but once I am navigating, the battery status (and signal strength) vanish from the display. Is there any way I can keep the battery status on the screen while navigating? Thanks for any ideas.
Battery status
All of the nuvi's work this way. The only time they show the battery status meter is when they are running on battery power. There is no way to make the battery status show when it is charging or operating via a power adapter. You can go to the diagnostics screen and it will show the % of charge.
