Need Help Updating to Latest Map

I've just gotten the replacement for the Nuvi 265WT that died a couple days ago; I've updated the firmware, registered the unit and am attempting to update to the latest map, 2010.30. I downloaded the Garmin Communicator addon for Firefox, agreed to the EULA, and authorized the download. The website presented me with a product key and 2 files: prodkey.bin and prodkeyNA.bin. Now the web page says: Computer ready for Download (green, check), Device Ready for Download (green, check), Processing...(yellow, unchecked). After that, and after waiting 15, 20 mins, nothing happens. When I try to start over, it itlls me that I have already downloaded the map, and that I must double click on it to install it, but clicking on either of the .bin files tells me it's an unknown file type. Trying to open it in Ultra ISO gives the same error. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wronr, or give me some guidance? I will be grateful for any help.

I figure Firefox is causing the issue with the download and install. The download that I did was over 2g and included the map for my GPS unit and map for MAPSOURCE. The MAP product key is used to unlock both maps. Once I downloaded the file, I double clicked the file to download the maps. The product key was needed to unlock both maps. It took a very long time to do the installs.

Have you ever used or installed MAPSOURCE? It allows you to create routes for your GPS unit, view the map, view mapoints and favorites, etc.. It is a little tricky to install because the download on the Garmin web page is an update. It has been a while, but I believe I had to create a blank MapSource.exe and place it in the C:\Garmin directory before I could install the MAPSOURCE software.

If you install the MAPSOURCE software prior to installing the MAP for your GPS unit, it will install a MAP for MAPSOURCE as well.

Thanks for your response,

Thanks for your response, ampx2. I haven't tried MapSource yet, as I've so far just followed the directions on the Garmin web page. It appears they don't make it easy to do a map update, but I still have 58 days to try to make it work; I'll begin by looking into the MapSource situation. Thanks again for your suggestion.

Firefox

Your welcome.

I figure Firefox is trying to uncompress the file even tho it is an EXE file. If you download the file you will see what I mean if you use WINZIP or some other compression program to view the file.

Try using Internet Explorer or Chrome or something like that to try and download the file.

I would also save a copy on a jump drive and save the map key in case you need to reinstall for some reason.

The map I downloaded was just over 2 gig.

The problem actually seems

The problem actually seems to be somewhat deeper than that, because the 2 .bin files were only 8 bytes each, and there was no corresponding .cue file for either.

I know that I should have ended up with an .exe, and I have no idea why both FireFox and Internet Explorer would download .bin files.

I think I'll put the question to Garmin's support reps and see what they make of it. I've been reading about how seemingly convoluted it is to perform these updates, and wondering why it should take several hours to download a 2+GB file. With my DSL connection, I can usually complete that size in mere seconds.

Time to download

You must have a VERY fast DSL connection. I have cable modem and it takes me an hour to download a 4 gig movie file. I have not tried downloading a Garmin map yet though. The time delays might be caused by the Garmin servers.

Lol...OK, when I say "mere

Lol...OK, when I say "mere Seconds" I mean something on the order of 45-60 seconds. It's a 10mbs line from CenturyLink.net, the local telco.

Doesn't make sense

With that speed you can only get 1.25MB/sec tops. That translates to 75MB in 1 minute. A 2GB file will be fully downloaded in 25+ minutes, not in 60 seconds.

Map Update - Windows 7

The 2 Gig file is complete, should end with a .exe. I work at Garmin and will repost in a minute. Let me see if the Windows 7 is an issue.

Speed of the download

Hello Again - The network speed will vary, but once you get it downloaded, you should be able to run it with the device attached with the USB cable without any issues. If you get any specific errors and can either relay them to me, or a screen shot, let me know.

@ chewbacca You know, you're

@ chewbacca

You know, you're most likely correct--I may be thinking if MB's instead of GB's--I get about 1274mbs. Sorry if I'm confused--things aren't going right today.

@hanski9

The problem is that the only thing I've been able to download is 2 .bin files of 8 bytes each. I have not got the 2GB file at all.

Product Registered?

From the my.garmin.com website, after you log in of course, on the myMaps tab, does it show you the list of products and give you the chance to "Download Again"?

Suggest

Suggest you phone Garmin support before they close for the weekend. You should be downloading a 2GB file that will take, at the very least, a half hour to download.

If when you try to download the file a second time your getting an message that you've already downloaded the file then the only way this is going to get fixed is if Garmin resets your account.

Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

Success ???

Any luck getting the download to finish?

A hanski9 It does give me

A hanski9

It does give me the option to download again, and when I do, I get the message that I've already downloaded the file; I can cancel, download and overwrite, or download with an increased number.

I've already missed the opportunity to call tonight; have to wait until Monday and have them reset my account, and hope it works then.

Thank you for all your help, and the same to the others who responded. I really appreciate it.

I have to go out now, for a few hours, but I will be back online later tonight.

BTW, the original problem might have been caused by my Panda Internet suite going bananas; It suddenly went berserk, refused to initialize, and slowed my machine to near uselessness, capturing 80% of my CPU usage. I have no idea why it happened, but finally, I had to uninstall it.

That might have been the culprit. It's also a good idea to clear browser temp files before retrying.

DId you ever get your map updated?

Was wondering if you were ever successful getting your map downloaded?
