I have two nuvi units. Download two maps?

I own a nuvi 680 and a nuvi 265t. I have purchased two numap lifetime cards, one for each unit. Do I have to download a map for each unit when there is an upgradeed map available? Is there any way to download one map and load it on to both units? I also sent this question to Garmin, but thought I would pose the same question here to see how some of you handle it. Download times are pretty long on my 1.5 dsl. Thanks.

I have the same issue. I just bought my nuvi 1390t and upgraded my nuvi 360. I downloaded both "versions" not knowing if I had too. It took over 4 hours on my 1.5 dsl for over 2GB. I hit mine then went out to dinner with the wife. Good luck.

I believe you have to

I believe you have to download one for each unit as they are formatted/password keyed to work only in the unit you have hooked up at the time of the download.

SO, if you have more than

SO, if you have more than one unit, you do not have to down the map multiple times. Here is the response from Garmin.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Yes. You can download the maps and allow them to transfer to the first device. Once completed you can connect the second unit and double click on the Garmin_RMU..... file. You will be asked for the product key for the second unit which can be found under Manage Maps in your MyGarmin Account. Once the product key is entered the maps will transfer to your second device.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance."

Next update I will try this and save myself a few hours on the download process. Hope this helps someone else too.

Good to know that

Good to know that, and thanks for sharing the info.

If these two devices are not in same series, for example, 205W and 1390T, can I still do that?

hope not

i think you should get only one and do a "research" online for the socond one

I think the map updates are the same for all nuvi units, but don't quote me on that. Maybe somone here on the site can confirm that.

Jon, your raised an interesting question.

There is some mystery on how all this works. For the US market, some nüvi models come with a regional or sometimes referred to as a 49 state mapset. Other models come with a full or North America mapset that includes Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada, the Bahamas and Caymans.

Similarly for the Canadian market, some nüvis come with Canada only, and other models include the US. I would suspect that those sold for Australia, Asia and Europe each have their unique mapsets.

The question is that if I had US models of a 200W and a 250W that have the regional and full mapsets respectively, would the downloads be different, or does some magic in the background unlock certain regions for the different models?

I have a friend who has a 200 (regional maps) and he went into Canada recently only to discover he had no maps! Garmin told him he could purchase City Navigator North America and then he would have the full maps. I would have to assume that if he had done that and then bought the nüMap updates he would get the full updates on his 200. That may not be a safe assumption unless the download is the same regardless and the update process looks at what is installed on the device and updates like for like.

Curious minds would like to know how this works. Does someone know for sure just how this is done?

The download is the same for ALL units.

You can use one single download to update any number of units. The download is the same regardless of the model.

What to install to the unit (regional maps vs the full mapset) is decided upon when you unit is connected to the PC at the installation stage. In this stage, the nuvi is polled (using GarminDevice.xml and possibly another unseen nuvi memory area) and the mapset installed on the unit is reported to Garmin's servers which then verify that the unit is qualified for the product.

In the case of limited memory nuvis (Lower 48 States mapset), the install process then gives the user a choice of what to install since the newer "Lower 48 states" will no longer fit on the unit (due to map data increase). The options are regional areas that are pre-built to fit into a predetermind memory size. For the CN NA NT 2010.30 release, the current mapset regions are:

1. Canada + Border States
2. Lower 49 States
3. East
4. West
5. Lower 49 States NE
6. Lower 49 States NW
7. Lower 49 States SE
8. Lower 49 States SW

These regions will change depending on the map release.

CNNT and the 200W

I can confirm that the 200W upgraded with CNNT 2009 installed from the DVD gives you all 48 plus AK and Canada. I also updated mine with the same 2009.11 mapset for my 765T and it all still fit.

I can't comment on later versions fitting completely since I didn't buy lifetime maps for either, but I do have the lifetime purchase option now on the 200 since I bought the DVD for that unit.

By the way, I can't remember the details now but when a mapset is installed in Mapsource you can then create sets using states/provinces of your choice. As long as you have the key for the map & unit plugged into mapsource, you can then load them to the unit and also save them on your PC for manual loading/unloading later.
