Finding Coordinates for Favorites ?

Is there a way to find the lat/long coordinates of Favorites that are already saved to a GPS? I have not been successul in finding that information.

I know I can download it through a couple of downloadable programs available but I hoped there may be a way to view them without downloading.

The Where Am I function allows you to see these coordinates for where you are at the moment but if you want to later go back to the saved Favorites and view this info how would you do that ?

thanks!

Extra POI Editor or Simulation Mode

You can use Extra POI Editor's File\Open Garmin Favourites command to see all your favs, then double click the favourite and it will open a POI Edit window with the coordinates displayed at the top left.

Also you can put the GPS in simulation mode by tapping Tools -> System, then set GPS Simulator to On. Then use Where To to select the favourite, tap the Map button on the bottom of the screen, then tap Set Loc. Then use the Where Am I command to see the coordinates of the location you set.

complicated, huh ?

Boy, is that complicated or what? Thanks for sharing that with me.....I never would have figured it out. it seems Garmin would have had that info readily available.

I appreciate it! smile

Yea...

...thanks a lot for the info.

Follow-up....

Thanks ghayman for the additional info and for the informative site you have to help us newbies out smile

I have a follow-up question now that I have found the coordinates. The issue probably has been addressed but I cannot find it. Sometimes the search functions are not precise enough.

My Garmin nuvi 205W is displaying the coordinates in a different format, it seems, than what is needed for developing a CSV file. The format for one of my points is N34 degrees 40.847 minutes and W086 degrees 45.171 minutes. I need to convert this to the format used in the CSV file.

I understand the North coordinates are the LAT and the West coordinates are the LONG and that requires a negative sign in front of the degrees. Now what I need to know is how to convert the rest of it into the decimal format required. Can someone pleaes point me in the direction of an article or post that explains it ? I have several to convert so the formula or process to allow me to convert all of them would be great.

I don't suppose someone already has created a spreadsheet to make the conversions ?

thanks!

Antoher converter

I like this converter that you can download and put on a flash drive or on the SD card in a Garmin and use it offline on any Unix or Windows computer.

It will convert between many kinds of coordinate systems.

You can convert just one set of coordinates in the main screen or do a batch conversion on lots of coordinates in a file.

Follow the instructions for installing the end-user version and then you can copy the resulting "geotrans" folder to any media such as flash drives, cds, SDcards etc.

If your 205W is like my 255W you can choose other ways of displaying the cordinates by going to Where to > Coordinates > Format, and choose from three styles.

I'm lazy...I use google earth to find coordinates

Since I also use google earth to find locations where no reliable address may be found, I'm using it to find the coordinates in the first place. That is, I can often use the name of the POI, say, "Joe's Diner, Cleveland, OH" and it will zoom into that location. I then just hover over the image and pick off the LAT/LON from it.

Reversing that need by putting a known address into google earth will also produce the coordinates.

Try itouchmaps

Just enter your favorite location on http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html and it displays the latitude & longitude.

I used this one with good

I used this one with good results.
