Update

rjrsw wrote:

Everything went smooth on the new lifetime map upgrade, took about 45 min to download and about 10 min for the install.

Less than an hour total from logging on to Garmin site to map install into my 885t completed. Love the USB 2.0 on the 885t, so much faster than my old 760.

rjrsw,

Now that you've done the update to 2010.30, doe4s your Voice Recognition still work properly ?

Specifically, searching POI's by "Place Name" ?

I have had a ton of problems with the 2010.20 and the VR.... something messed up big time when I updated asnd have not been able to figure it out.

I'm hoping that if I update to 2010.30 that all the files will be updated properly o the unit and my VR will start to work properly again.

Thanks.

Ah-ha! 6.15.7

My subject says it all.

Good to know - thanks!

I may tackle the download/install later today for my 660.

Map Display Details

Does anyone who has instaled the latest update notice any difference at all in the amount of "detail" displayed at the various zoom levels ?

One of the complaints or problems I have heard about (and experienced) is the lack of detail shown/displayed.

Has this version changed that in any way ?

I tested and all my voice recognition features still work the same as they did since the 2010.10 and 2010.20 installs. I had no problems with 2010.20.

Search by "Place Name" worked fine.

I cannot find anything that works better or worse than before.

Has anyone in the Phoenix areas seen a junction view?

Has anyone in the Phoenix areas seen a junction view with the road signage pop up with this new map update? The JV file is new.

It would be nice to know if they added the Phoenix area. The only place I have seen the junction view was when I was in LA in June.

thanks a ton! downloading

thanks a ton! downloading for my 680 now grin

Wish they had a better method for splitting load to GPS and SD

My download was only 20 minutes, however it took over an hour and a half with my c530 (USB 1.1). The problem that I have is that my c530 cannot take the complete map. I have several choices that the update offers and was able to load "lower 48 states west". You can see a visual representation of what areas are included, and it appeared that Canada, Alaska, and all of the states on the East (1 level deep) were not included.
The next step is to load the remaining areas into my SD card, through Mapinstall. Using Map install you can select various areas to create a map on and load on the card. This is guesswork to make sure I selected all of the areas that were missing, and I needed to remember the visualization that the original install provided (actually reran it which took a lot of time).
Seems like Garmin should offer an option either through the original update or Map Install to easily select a group and also select the missing group and place them in the correct location.

Installed 2010.30 Map On My Nuvi 660 - No Problem

I just finished downloading and installing the 2010.30 map update on my 660. It updated without a single problem.

For the record, this was the amount of free space on my 660 with each of the mapsets I've installed:

New, with 2008 maps - 540MB
After 2010.10 update - 428MB
After 2010.20 update - 394MB
After 2010.30 update - 379MB

I was able to install the update without having to delete any files.

1. Backed up all current files on the 660 to my PC.

2. The 2.06GB download took 46 min. over my 10Mb internet connection.

3. Using the free 7-Zip program, I extracted the files in the rar file to an empty work folder which took 8 min.

4. Finally, I ran the Setup.exe file from the \Windows sub-folder where I extracted the contents of the rar file. It took 1 hr, 48 min. to complete the install (install MapSource on the PC & upload the map file to the 660) due in most part to the slow USB 1.1 port of the 660.

5. (Optional) To free up some disk space on my PC (about 1.7GB), I went into Windows Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and deleted the 2010.20 maps.

The 2010.30 map update installed version 6.15.7 of MapSource on my PC.

Just one question

Just one question, why did you extract the files using 7-Zip? Is there some advantage to doing this over just double clicking on the downloaded file and letting the program's installer do the work?

Sorry, I gues that's 2 questions.

Sorry, I gues that's 2 questions.

1. Early on, I read here where some users had one problem or another executing the download file and would have to start it over. Each time you start it over, it has to go through the extraction process again. I just got in the habit of extracting it manually, ONCE, so if something else went wrong, it was already extracted and all I had to do was execute the setup.exe file.

2. Some users would execute the downloaded file and think it was hung up because it didn't seem to be doing anything. They didn't wait long enough for the extraction process to complete. So they would needlessly get in a loop of restarting it several times.

In the 4 mile radius around our house I see all kinds of additions. I see several subdivisions added that have been there for a while, I see the locations of several roads corrected. One Shopping center still has not been mapped tho so it hasn't been completely brought up to date. Overall I'm impressed.

Any one having a problem getting on the garmin site, after i got the map downloaded and went to the install part of it the dang thing goes as far as "connecting to server" and it just stays at that point, tried about 4 times and it only gets that far, wonder whats going on, is garmin site overloaded or is something wrong with the installation.

Update time unknown

I did the download last night, started the update and went to bed. So, I don't know how long it took.

After I drink some more coffee, I'll check everything out for problems.

Thanks to this site and DorkusNimrod for the "Heads Up".

I don't travel like I used to, but it's nice to have "up to date" maps to avoid surprises and take advantage of new roads.

Now, I wonder which way the 660 will tell me to turn out of the driveway to get to work on this release? First 2 maps were turn left, last one was to the right.

Have you checked to see if something else on your PC might be blocking internet access. I run ZoneAlarm firewall, A/V - A/S and when the map install program started, the firewall blocked outbound internet access until I gave the program permission. After that, the install ran to completion with no problem.

Welcome Change

I agree this was a welcome change. I still had to hacka round to get to install on my laptop. For some reason when I used the Garmin solution to install I did not get the option. When I decompressed to an external drive then I did get the option.

Still a welcome change they must e listening some.

The firewall is the culprit, I had 2 firewall running and when i turned off the windows and norton firewalls rerun the installer program and it went right to the garmin site and started to finish the map install. Thanks Gary.

adcusnret wrote:

Its not a good idea to have 2 firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. software programs running on your PC at the same time. Most will conflict with each other and cause problems. At a minimum, it will slow your PC down.

I learned that the hard way, after troubleshooting BSOD's, lockups, strange internet access problems and slow download or upload speeds. I have my Windows firewall turned off.

This is definately a situation where, "if one is good, two is better" does NOT apply.

I've read in various forums where a user was running fine with version "X" of their firewall, A/V, A/S along with a second program, but when they upgraded to a newer version "Y" of the program, they started having various problems.

Sometimes, newer versions are completely re-written and create a conflict where none existed before.

EDIT: Try Googling running multiple firewalls and read some of the results. One of them is from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/firewalls/faq.aspx

About half way down the page, click on the topic "Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a different company?"

2 firewalls

I use two firewalls myself, however, one is a hardware FW in the form of my router. The software FW is Zone Alarm. Two SW firewalls should not be used in conjunction with each other for the reasons above; they can cause issues.

There are better ways to increase security, like a good Hosts file, as they are passive protection and don't create conflicts.

We have much the same setup. Any router used at home will have a basic firewall (unless its been turned off in the options) to guard against inbound threats. If the router firewall is doing its job, then an inbound threat will probably never reach the PC and its software firewall.

I also run ZoneAlarm (Internet Security Suite) which is a firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software program. While guarding against inbound threats (which it may never see because the router's hardware firewall should block it first) it also watches for questionable outbound activity, trojans, malware, spyware, keyloggers, etc. that may get installed on my PC as a result of something bad I've downloaded, or as an attached file to an email that I stupidly executed, if I've ignored ZoneAlarm's warning not to execute it.

Norton suggests not using Windows firewall when using a product (e.g., Norton Internet Security) with a Norton firewall. I'm pretty sure the typical Norton installation that includes a firewall will turn off the Windows firewall in the standard installation.

I tried out the 2010.3 yesterday and all works well.

I also checked in Mapsource and compared the 2010.2 to the new 2010.3 and as I've found in past quarterly updates, this new map once again includes many map and POI updates that affect me in a positive way in Arizona.

Lane assist / junction view coverage.

I am also seeing some road and POI additions. However over the course of the last couple of updates I have not found any expansion in coverage of either lane assist or junction views. Has anyone found any locations where lane assists (multiple turn arrows) or junction views have been added?
