Garmin Training Ctr. and Garmin MapSource

I followed these instructions I found online:

There's a trick to getting MapSource, and it works! Best part is, it's right from Garmin with no hacks or cracks.

Download the Training Center:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=835

Install it

Then download the MapSource update:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Install it.

You now have full blown MapSource, enjoy!
******

I did so using a fairly new Netbook running Windows XP Home, SP.
(I'm a Mac user and I bought the Netbook just to learn Windows, so I don't know my way around XP very well).

After installing the above software, connecting my Nuvi 650 to the Netbook, and launching the Training Ctr., when it came to locating the Nuvi 650, I got this alert: Some devices were found; however, none have the necessary capabilities.....You may need to set the interface option on your Garmin GPS to "Garmin" or "Host".

Am I out of luck because my Nuvi 650 won't support these programs?

If not, anyone know how to: set the interface option on your Garmin GPS to "Garmin" or "Host".

Many thanks.

Actually using this method, you have a functioning copy of Mapsource with a base map and no detail maps. If you want detail maps, you either need to install them from DVD, or if you perform a Garmin map download and update, it will install Mapsource with the detailed maps.

I think the 6xx series is supported on Mapsource so you should be able to transfer waypoints from your nuvi to Mapsource. I don't have the answer to your question, so hopefully some of the 6xx owners will chime in.

Key step to getting full maps

If you are a new Garmin owner and entitled to a 60 day free map update, it is important to do the above BEFORE accepting the free map update, and to do it on the same computer that you would like the complete version of Mapsource on. Then when you download the map update, the download code will see that you have Mapsource and install the full maps on your system. Otherwise you only get the much more limited base map.

I can find no way to update mapsource with the full map after doing the free gps update. There might be a way, but I can't find it. So one GPS means one full copy of the map on one computer.

This is information that Garmin support gives out very freely, so one should not feel like they are cheating Garmin in any way.

.

You don't need to already have MapSource installed on the computer when you do the map update.

Installing the map update will install MapSource to the computer with the updated maps and update the maps on the GPS unit.

You can just re-run the update if necessary to update the maps on the computer.

Roadtrip for Mac is similar

I had loaded Roadtrip for Mac which as with Mapsource had the base maps. After the free map update from Garmin the next time I opened the Roadtrip software I got the detailed maps installed.

.

It would be nice if they told you about it though. I only have the detailed maps for NA, and Europe as per my 775T. Mexico and Latin America would have been great!
