backing up/adding new maps on 255w

Hello, all,
I purchased a 255w on Ebay with preloaded US maps (it works perfectly!!) as I was doing a roadtrip in the US, and I live in Australia, so now I have returned home from a terrific trip and wish to buy some Aussie maps, which seem to be loaded on a SD card.
So, my question is that I want to backup my US maps for future use, and then delete these from my 255W, and upload into the device new Aussie maps from the SD card. Is this possible and/or advisable, and I have seen the maps I should look for on the device for backing up are GMAPBMAP.IMG and GMAPPROM.IMG but I see there is also a GMAPTZ.IMG...should I backup that one too? And once backed up to a computer, Do I understand correctly to reload them to the device I can either download them from computer to an SD card or directly into the device?
And, sorry, but one more question, do I have to have loaded at least one type of map directly into the device for it to work, or just run things from SD cards which I can change at any time??
Thankyou in advance...a newbie to all of this!!

Why would you delete? What's the benefit of deleting maps?

FYI the map on the preprogrammed SD card is tied to the card (to prevent piracy). You may be able to copy the map to Nuvi internal flash memory or other SD cards but you won't be able to use it. The only way you can use the map is to insert the SD card you purchase.

Read the following for more info on different types of Garmin maps (link may wrap around):

It's highly recommended that you backup the whole content of your Garmin Nuvi internal flash memory to your computer hard drive or some other storage devices.

I wouldn't touch any map related files on the Nuvi device if I were you.

Hi, Chewbacca,
the reason i want to delete the preloaded US maps...and I may be wrong..is that I want to be able to upload the new Aussie maps from an SD card, for example, so that will then free up my SD card slot in case I want to use other POI's that come on an SD card..like red light cameras..but as I say I could be understanding this all the wrong way! Do you know how big the internal memory of a garmin 255w is?
Thanks

2gb

The internal memory size is 2GB with probably around 500Mb free with the maps installed.

If the maps come on a Garmin preloaded SD card, then you cannot copy the maps from the card onto the device memory. (Well, you can, but they won't work.)

Also, you will not be able to put any other data on the card.

If the maps were loaded from a DVD, then you can load the maps to the device memory.

Once again you can NOT upload/copy data from the preprogrammed SD card to your Nuvi internal memory. To have Aussie/NZ map, you'll have to leave the SD card in the Nuvi SD slot.

I may be wrong but I believe Garmin's preprogrammed SD cards which contain maps are write protected. You have sufficient free space to store a lot of POIs in your Nuvi internal memory.

If you need more space, delete some voice files (after backing them up, of course). There's no reason to keep all voices unless you're multilingual and understand all of them.

This was somewhat alluded to so I thought I would mention it. You can transfer the maps from a Garmin preprogrammed SD Card to another drive for archival/backup purposes. However, those maps will only work from the SD Card that they were originally loaded onto as the maps are locked/tied to that particular SD Card. This makes it possible to backup your maps in the unlikely event that they become somehow corrupted.

Adding Maps

I have both US and European Maps on my 255 without any problems. You may find you can have both US and Aussie on yours.
