With my newly acquired Garmin 1690, the latest among their units, has a lot of problems which I encountered:
1. It cannot be registered & be updated...after the downloading and updating of the software, it doesn't restart itself after being disconnected from the computer as per instruction. What I did, I manually restart it and upon checking if it was updated, it did not nor registered.
2. Another defect has something to do with the icon of the phonebook that must appear when connected to the phone thru the bluetooth. Sometimes it is there, but oftentimes not. If it happens to be there, the moment you touch the icon, the power shut off or it restart if the unit is connected to cigarette lighter in the car.
3. Sometimes, when I also touch the place of destination...it shut off.
What is the best thing to do?
I was thinking about laying out the money for one, but I think I'll wait until I get more reviews.

I would call Garmin tech support and see if they can help with the registration and updates!
You should keep in mind "never buy new model from Garmin"... unless you want become beta tester and pay premium price for it...
Best thing to do? Return the one if you can and buy model that is on market for a while, that saves you money and dissapointment...
Sounds like a defective unit. I would take it back and get a replacement unit and if that one does the same thing I would find another model to purchase.
