Try the new Mac Magic Mouse

The scroll ball stuck in my 3 year old Mighty Mouse and I thought I had survived 2 extra years with it anyway so I stopped at the Madison WI Apple store yesterday and picked up a new Magic Mouse. It's great. No scroll ball to get dirty and stick, easily adjustable and goes everywhere with finger movement. I really like it. It just came out several weeks ago. Check it out.

magic mouse

I've got one at work, where it's very useful. At home I use a different suite of apps, and the kensignton multibutton mouse (optical elite) is more convenient.

I'm sure app and utility developers will stretch the capabilities of the magic mouse, enabling us to map more gestures -- then it might replace the multibutton varieties.

How is scrolling?

I welcome a better mouse from Apple. How well does scrolling work? I have gotten very fond of the smooth wheel on my Logitech mouse.

Re: Try The New Mac Magic Mouse...

Hi geochapman,

I agree that Apple has taken a quantum leap with their new mouse, however, I’m still looking for “multi-function“ capable mouse with application specific programming capability.

Currently I use a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse and can program 5 buttons for various tasks, as well as programming, that is application specific.

The minute Apple can offer a mouse with “those capabilities”, i’ll be the first one in line to buy it...

Scrolling--

Scrolling is a joy with the magic mouse; a very good model, with very good physics. Makes going back to a scroll wheel feel very clunky.

And you don't have to worry about your hands/fingers being clean enough to perform surgery -- there are no moving parts to contaminate.

(Of course you need a system/application that is responsive enough -- if it's sluggish with a scroll wheel, it's not going to get better with the magic mouse.)

ooooh. I'm jealous. I may have to ask Santa to bring me a Magic Mouse!

santa is going to be busy...

I brought mine home from work for the Thanksgiving break -- both kids tried it and each want one.

I guess it's...

time to battle the hordes at one of the local Apple stores to try one out. I'm thinking of going for a new desktop and this is an option that I _could_ be convinced to go for. Although, I'm hoping the right-click solutions I've seen online actually work.

If you are going to get a new iMac,

If you are going to get a new iMac, it comes with a wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse no extra charge.

Finally, something new us

Finally, something new us "other" Mac users. I still own my G5 20inch iMac (non-Intel version). Good to see I can buy something "new" for "my" mac. smile

If you're running Snow Leopard, you should check out BetterTouchTool http://blog.boastr.net/?page_id=255 which highly customizes the Magic Mouse.

Forgot to mention......

If you're not running Snow Leopard but you still want to enable the "momentum scrolling" (one of the best features of the Magic Mouse IMHO) even though it's not supposed to work with OS X 10.5.x, you CAN enter a script via Terminal to enable the momentum scrolling. Just google "OS X magic mouse momentum scrolling script" and you'll find it.

I really like the MS, makes searching through my bookmarks, forums, etc soooooo much easier......

Love the new mouse

It works well and it allows you to position your hand in ways that don't cause your wrist to ache.

Christmas?

I may ask Santa for one of these

Magic Mouse

Sounds interesting - I'll have to check it out.

I got one

and I really love it. As mentioned, it's really nice not having to have your fingers in a certain spot to scroll, it works anywhere on the surface. I also like the 2 finger swipe to go in either direction in a browser or in other instances also.

Too light for my hand

I tried one yesterday and it just seems too flimsy....

Just wondering.

Too flimsy for what? All a mouse does is move the cursor around, scroll and maybe open some applications etc.

I still like my Magic

It's been 2 months since I started this strand and I'm now using him on my MacBook while we're in Phoenix. Our apartment is somewhat more cramped than we're used to and he makes my computer use much more convenient. Allows me less wire and since a Mouse Pad is unnecessary, it's something else eliminated. First set of batteries didn't last to long but this second set of Duracells is doing fine. All i all, I feel he's well worth the money.

magicPrefs...

http://vladalexa.com/apps/osx/magicprefs/

a very useful pref pane for the magic mouse, letting you set and manage gestures and a lot more.

You need OSX 10.5 or later, but it's very useful.

Just got a new Mac......

before xmas. I had my granddaughter come over and show the wife and I how to use it. That's what they have in school and each student has a Mac to use. As for the Mighty Mouse, it's very nice and works great. The wireless key board is great too. My wife uses it to do video calls on Skype.

Another package for magic mouse users--

http://calftrail.com/sesamouse/

sesamouse -- a new one on the block, and a freebie. The web page openly says it uses undocumented interfaces, so it may not work with future OSX versions.

Haven't checked it out, just passing on the news.

Really enjoying it. Just

Really enjoying it.
Just purchased a second one.

Apple products usually feel 'solid' this one doesn't

In that case, why won't a $5 mouse do? It too points, click and opens applications. No, because a mouse needs to feel good in the hand, (the wired one does) not like something that feels like it'll break if it falls to the ground.
Anyway, it was just an observation... Apple products usually feel 'solid' and this one doesn't.

I couldn't disagree more......

eniku40 wrote:

My Magic Mouse feels rock-solid to me! From the 3/16" thick solid Lexan top to the all aluminum body, this mouse is one of the best built (yet still very agile and svelt) mouses (mice? lol) that I've ever owned and by FAR the best mouse Apple has ever put out....

I just got a new iMac a few

I just got a new iMac a few days ago and really enjoy using the Magic Mouse. I also got the new Magic Trackpad and that is really cool to use too. I find myself using both. It works with both Mac and Windows on bootcamp although not all gestures work on the Windows side so I just use the Magic Mouse. Another new toy.

Mighty Mouse and Magic Mouse

I've used both and love using the Magic Mouse with my MacBook Pro. It compliments it well and allows me to use gestures that I've been using on the touchpad.

hardly use it anymore...

I played with the apple tablet when it came out, and have one at work and one at home -- I hardly use a mouse anymore, at least on the mac.

Thanks, I think this might be my purchase when we get to Phoenix and to an Apple store. Does the Bluetooth stay connected? I agree MagicPrefs is almost a necessity.

wife complained about our wired apple mouse not scrolling upwards so what the heck ordered one and its great .scrolling is wonderful and as someone else stated you dont have to worry about any scroll wheel getting dirty.
mike

Different strokes--

If you can, it's a good idea to borrow a new device and try it for a while, to see if the two of you will get along.

I'll guess that a lot of the folks who enjoy the magic tablet and are proficient with it also have experience playing a musical instrument, particularly one requiring manual dexterity, such as a keyboard instrument, guitar, woodwind, or the like.

That mental mapping thing is another part of it -- a colleague at work has a hard time using a two button mouse, and remembering what menus come up under the right mouse button.

It's only easy for some folks. That's why good user interfaces provide alternatives.

You guys should try the magic trackpad. It works amazingly well.
