red light camera caught

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to the red light and speed cameras. I loaded mine yesterday. I pulled up to my first light and before I could even leave the intersection, 2 people drove through and flash/flash...

Thanks again

Thank you contributers.

I love my red light and speed camera files.

I love it

when people ride in my car, they are always impressed when the GPS warns me of the red light cams. One of the best things about my GPS!!

Very Valuable POI

The redlight camera POI is great. We have used it extensively while traveling through various parts of the US. It is always good to know where those contraptions are hidden!!!

Agree! Thumbs up to

Agree! Thumbs up to everyone involved with the redlight camera POI. I especially like the Beta version that gives the street names.

Politicians and Diapers must be changed often for the exact same reason...

Unfamiliar territory can be confusing

I find the red light poi very useful. In unfamiliar territory it gives me warning to make SURE I stop. Even tho I do not coast thru or run redlights I don't want to creep up and take the risk of a ticket.

This poi can save you money!

Perhaps you should re-read TITNTUFFs post?

Or did you want to turn the thread into the never ending revenue vs saftey debate?

Lets not, and just say we did.

Download the RL file.

It is part of the zip file. Download the regular RL file and you will also have the beta version.

Only install one version unless you want double Warning.

award?

I think that all of the people who are involved in the redlight camera effort should be given some sort of extra special award!! I believe that I might have already got a ticket if it were not for my redlight alerts. Others have told me the same thing. It cannot be easy putting all of these camera locations in these files!

Do Cameras Make Intersections More Dangerous?

Revealing article by two Los Angeles television channels that accidents increase after red light cameras are installed. No surprise to me!

http://cbs2.com/goldstein/Red.Light.Cameras.2.1301941.html

"Is it money or safety? We wanted to know actual numbers of accidents at red light camera intersections to see if they really went down.

When we asked, the LAPD became very defensive. The sergeant in charge told me in an e-mail, "The city would hope that it is the goal of KCBS/KCAL to discuss the positive aspects of the photo red light program."

So we filed a public records request. The department charged us more than $500 for a computer run. When we got the numbers back, they told a different story.

We looked at every accident at every red light camera intersection for six months of data before the cameras were installed and six months after.

The final figures? Twenty of the 32 intersections show accidents up after the cameras were installed! Three remained the same and only nine intersections showed accidents decreasing."

Cameras and accidents

I've heard that rear-end collisions have increased pretty much everywhere as a result of red light cameras but side-impact collisions are down. Since the latter are frequently more serious, I guess one could give the cameras some credit for potentially saving lives.

While I'm not a fan of red light cameras, I think that if there's a nice, long, reasonably configured yellow light time then that's probably ok. It would be nice if the cameras gave people a break if they just barely missed the red light but a long enough yellow solves this problem. The best use for these cameras is where the light turns red and 5 or 6 more cars go through the intersection... the drivers in that case definitely deserve the ticket.

Driving In NY they are all

Driving In NY they are all over the place the thing just beeps constantly. A little annoying sometimes, but i guess its better than a ticket

I think there is a post on

I think there is a post on the main page about how to stop the beeping

couldn't help..

Couldn't help but actually read through all the responses to this post. Thank you very much for all your hard work. I too am impressed with the effectiveness of this file. I noticed that virginia has many cameras that weren't on the file, I wished I could have taken down all of the intersections, but I was away on vacaction, so I'd probably never go there again. Once again thanks for all the hard work.

Interesting.

I wonder what was the difference in fatalities?

So rear enders went up because drivers were actually stopping at red lights! This would be funny if it weren't such a tragic comment on how too many drivers treat traffic laws.

Is the TV station implying that we remove red light cameras, thus perhaps encouraging running of the lights?

--
nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

Think you're missing the point

The accident rate probably went up because people who might normally run through when the light is yellow may decide at the last second to slam on the brakes if the yellow light is showing becuase they don't want to risk a ticket. The person behind them (probably following to close) rear ends them.
Sure data can in many cases be scewed to show the reporters bias but clearly traffic cameras were never really devised for safety. They are a taxation mechinism for cities and counties.
Does anyone know of a traffic camera up anywhere in the USA that does not have an operating profit year over year and the city/county leaves it up and running?

Yep - It's worth the time. . .

Yep - It's worth the time to stay active on this site to have access to these files to update your unit regularly.

I drove up to Nashville, TN and back yesterday from MGM and made sure that I updated these.

To my knowledge Virginia doesn't have the cameras as of yet. There were installations in NoVA, but those were all pulled. Are you sure you saw the enforcement cameras mounted on poles along side the street and not sensor and traffic units on the cantilever beams for signals?

Drivers risk running the red and drivers do follow too closely.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

I had to turn it off.

Because where I live there is a whole bunch of them. Especially on the road I drive most often. The warnings get a little annoying after a while. Since I already know where they are, it is okay.

Drivers risk running the red

We call it Tailgating in these parts. If you hit some that needs to stop for a changing light, your going to pay for damages every time..

I see that you have a years subscription and that you have actually downloaded the file 3 times already.

Could the file be downloading to an area of your computer that you didn't know if was downloading to?

Just Delete

ianlin wrote:

Why not just go in to the file after downloading it and delete the lines showing the cameras you don't want to be alerted to. Each one shows a number making it easy to figure out which ones to delete.

Possible they don't have unzip program?

Most computers have it but some don't have a program to unzip the file. If the file isn't unzipped would think the garmin can't read it.

Please stop

wnc2899 wrote:

Please stop yelling. Using all capital letters isn't going to get you an answer any faster.

A little more information would be helpful. What broswer are you using for example. Different browsers place downloaded file in different places on your PC so it would be helpful to know what browser you use so at least we'd have someplace to start to help you.

This is great

Whenever I go to an area that I'm unfamiliar with, I use the GPS pretty much for the Red Light cameras. Most address aren't hard to find, the red lights can be a bear if you don't see the signs or the flags.

Love it!

The red light file is such a complete file since the users are active contributors. Kudos to Miss POI for coordinating and allowing this to be a community effort!

If you don't have a Zip program or a version of Windows with this functionality built-in, then get 7-Zip. It's free and open-source, and is probably just about the best compression/decompression program available.

Or even better get Total

Or even better get Total Commander at:

http://www.ghisler.com

It's shareware, but fully functional from install, and not only does it have built in zip and unzip it has the added bonus of being the best file manager on the planet! smile

good

Good to see it is working everywhere.
I have it installed on my Garmin. and It sounds loudly in Baltimore city.

I could not believe how many red light cam warnings I received from my GPS while on vacation in San Francisco.
