TomTom 140 - any good?

Sounds like the same deal that Crutchfield had a few weeks ago, along with free shipping too. The GPS's were $50 cheaper than list. The prices are $149.99 for the 140S (speech) and $129.99 for the regular model. Amazon has the 140S for $122 plus shipping right now. That low price you quoted is very good, but I wonder if is an end-of-the year price to clean out inventory for the next new model? Last Christmas, I bought a Model 125 for $99 at Best Buy, and a few months later the 140/140S were announced. If you need a new GPS, buy it and use it, cause the 140S is an excellent unit. I have one also.

Took the plunge earlier today. Total came out to $227 + change with tax and delivery. Now I get to see just how good the new technology and the 5 inch screen are. I only hope my One NE doesn't get jealous and quit working now!

Yep ordered mine also from HSN, too good to pass up. Looked all over the net and HSN had the best price.

The one thing the 140 doesn't have is TTS so you'll hear it say "turn left in 500 feet" but not "turn left on to Main Street in 500 feet".

This could be a deal breaker to a lot of people

Looks like TomTom is becoming more and more popular these days.

It is my understanding that the 140 does not have a internal microphone.

What a difference 5 inches makes! I'm loving the heck out of this new machine. TTV is nice also, although you have to use the computer generated voice, the other voices will not work with it - as per the instructions. I even made my own cursor from a picture of my vehicle! All of my POI's loaded with no problems, but I had to clean up some of the icons.

The shade of red I used in my FD icons had to be made darker in order for them to show up on the screen. It seems that the lighter shade of red that I originally used acts as a mask on the 540S and any icons that have that particular shade will not show up correctly. I even had to change the color on one of the 'red light camera' icons that I'm using. I used PAINT.net v 3.5 to correct the problem and to make my vehicle cursor.

If you want your icons to appear without a white frame/background around them then you'll have to add a red mask - the light red shade in the PAINT.net utility is the correct color and works like a charm. I fixed the HOT DOG icon, the RC CHURCH icon, the FD icon, a RED LIGHT CAMERA icon, and the TRUCK STOP icon using the utility with no problems at all.

BTW...PAINT.net v3.5 is a FREE utility, you might want to give it a try!
