Hi all,
Just signed on to POI Factory forums. Cool place! Was wondering if anybody knew how to hack the Nuvi 660 so that new voices (TTS or not) can be added?
Look here:
http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/voices/
The 300 and 600 series are not supported but there must be a way no?
Thank you!
Nope
The new voices are not supported on the 3xx/6xx series and no one that I know of has been able to hack them or the unit to allow them to be used. Only Garmin themselves would be able to get the units to use the newer voices...if they have not yet done so, I doubt they would do it now. I'm sure they'd rather you buy a new GPS...

voices
if u guys were able to, who's voice would u want on there. your voice? or a celeb? and if it's the latter which one?
I'd pick Brett Favre for my voice of choice...

The gps would likely say something like this:
"Turn right on Maple street, No no I mean left of Maple Street, Oh wait, I meant to say get into the right lane.... Sorry, the left lane!"
You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.
Heath Ledger

I'd pick Heath Ledger as the Joker as my celeb voice on the GPS. It would go something like this:
"The joke's on you buddy, ya shoulda taken exit 185 back ten miles ago. Oops I guess I forgot to prompt you, ha ha ha!! Whyyyy so serious?"

Hearing Voices Again
Not sure if these are what you are looking for, but give http://www.pigtones.com/home/ a try.
I guess that sounds better
I guess that sounds better in your head than it reads on a monitor.
Expensive and
Not sure if these are what you are looking for, but give http://www.pigtones.com/home/ a try.
Not only are these voices expensive at $13.00 a pop but they aren't TTS voices either, as per the right hand side of the page in your link:
Pigtones does not support TTS (Text to Speach).
Hopefully their product is better than their webpage spelling

TTS as algorithm
Hi
It’s hard with TTS voices, coz the different models uses different TTS algorithms, 2x5 series use another TTS file than the 7x5 series does.
I am not sure which algorithm the 6xx series use.
The normal voice file is just a file containing a lot of small recorded files, but TTS is based on a algorithm, that translate the words.

Funny TTS voices
I'd pick Heath Ledger as the Joker as my celeb voice on the GPS. It would go something like this:
"The joke's on you buddy, ya shoulda taken exit 185 back ten miles ago. Oops I guess I forgot to prompt you, ha ha ha!! Whyyyy so serious?"
I admit, that would be great. Especially a line like that. I'd probably wreck because I would laugh so hard.
Yeah, I don't understand why Garmin does not allow other TTS voices on certain units.
I assume it has to do with what mike42dk said.

I have been tring too to change voices add but with no luck
Wrong! You know someone... LOL!
... and no one that I know of has been able to hack them or the unit to allow them to be used. Only Garmin themselves would be able to get the units to use the newer voices...
Well, I was wondering what I could do with this knowledge. Maybe this is it. I could convert the encrypted voice back to normal non-TTS voice so it is compatible with older GPS.
There is a little bummer of 2: some voice prompts required by the regular non-TTS are not available in the encrypted non-TTS voices. Can you imagine that? So much more phrases and some are missing... Well, it is still do-able, but the missing voice prompts would need to be created manually using the existing ones. I mean by that that the words exist in the new voices, but they are not standalone voice prompts.
This means I need to operate manually on each voice and release them one by one. I won't do that for sure because of copyright reasons.
Just for the sake of discussion, which of the encrypted voices would you like to have?
Clarification
The new encrypted non-TTS voices are missing a lot of voice prompts. Even doing some cut&paste is not enough. Words like 13, 14, 15, ... simply do not exist. Maybe I can extract phonemes and create those words or change 13 to "10 plus 3"... LOL:
"In 10 plus 3 meters, turn right"
I quiiiiitt!
After a few hours of audio file stripping, I quit! I tried to convert the encrypted DrNightmare to a regular non-TTS DrNightmare. Oh! Mannnn! That was painful. I stripped many words and converted nearly all the voice samples. Half of them had to be reworked. There are still a dozen words that do not exist.
In short, the result is 90% good but far from perfect. For the missing words, I replaced them with a woman's voice. Not good at all...
To conclude, let'S forget about converting encrypted to non-encrypted non-TTS voices. That can't be done because there are too many missing words. Also, I suspect the GPS to build its own phrases with some of the words, so if you do not have all the words, it will simply not work. Stick to making your own voices... Or use the pre-made ones!
