Laser Detectors
Saw it this morning in the Washington Post/Metro Section. Chevy Chase & Montgomery County have been handing out tickets in the last year big-time. Their budgets have been severely cut by the recession. The particular area they are talking about is just north of Chevy Chase Circle where there are existing speed cameras which are in the POI database. Guess they're not getting enough revenue.
I drive the speed limit & take back streets. Hope the locals mind!

If you get a Ticket
If you get a Ticket from any type of camera or are handed one by a police officer, you deserve what you get.
There is absolutely no reason or excuse for it, these cameras are just going to get better and the technology will become even more clever in their technique to catch you. So slow down Stop before the stop stripe, make complete stops before the right hand turns and be sure to have the most up to date files from the POI-Factory so you are always aware of your surroundings, just for those mindless moments.
The LASER technology just north of Chevy Chase Circle, is the beginning of whats to come, so expect to see these replacing existing equipment everywhere. .

The real truth is, if you get a ticket from any of these cameras, maybe you deserved a ticket and maybe you didn't, but either way, your due process rights have been violated. These cameras decrease safety and should not be allowed anywhere. They are simply a tool to take your money from you and put it into someone else's pocket. The technology doesn't matter, they need to be banned.
No you wake up and read completely all the way to the bottom
There is a reason for signature lines in posts, and if you would have continued to read mine you would have seen how I stand on this.
You still have due process, all you have to do is return the ticket and tell them you want a hearing, which could lead to a court date if not settled then. So I ask you, what due process has been violated?
The only thing Violated is the law and that's what gets you a ticket in the first place. I know here in Cleveland if you don't agree with the ticket you just sign it send it back and they give you a hearing date. So your due process is indeed in tact.
The real truth as you put it is,
if you get a ticket from any of these cameras and found guilty of multiple offensives the fines need to be doubled and tripled or higher, to stop flagrant violation of these laws.
Now if you don't like the laws, may I suggest you continue to read my signature, and of course slow down, stop before you get to the stop Line and make a complete stop before making that right turn. An be sure to have the newest POI Camera file loaded from the POI-Factory just to be aware of your surroundings. And you won't find yourself in a situation paying for my Garbage pickup, which I do thank people for!

Pay for your own garbage pick up. These cameras need to be banned everywhere and the thieves who have managed to get these laws implemented need to be put out of business and punished. Your garbage collection should be paid by you, not the unlucky motorist that gets trapped by a short yellow light at one of these camera locations or who gets blindsided by some poorly marked speed trap. Combine that with the fact that these things actually decrease safety and can cost lives on our highways give us lots of reasons to ban them. You should be ashamed of promoting them for your selfish reasons.
Speed Cameras
Did I mention that I recall that the legal limit was reduced 5 mph prior to the first set of cameras being installed???
It's probably just a safety thing.
Fred
Cameras?
Your have made some valid points BobDee. The only thing that really bothers me is that these robot tickets are treated like parking tickets in the eyes of the law. The error in this thinking is that no one is put in danger by a car that is parked illegally while running a red light or speeding does put others in danger. Also, there isn't an operator of a parked car, so issuing the ticket to the owner makes sense. But if my son or daughter borrows my car, runs a red light and is involved in a wreck as a result, how is giving me a robot ticket going to contribute to the general highway safety? Shouldn't the person who commits the illegal act be the one who is held responsible?

rental car
Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever received a charge from a rental car company for a red light or speed camera violation they received while renting a car?

Have these same village idiots forgoten why the revenue for the community is down??? Did they ever stop and think that the revenue is down for the people they are inflecting these fines on??
RE: Rental Car
I have not received a ticket for Speeding or Red Light infraction but have recevied a ticket for a toll booth violation in a rental car. The interesting thing, and more fodder for those against cameras, was that I planned my route that trip to avoid toll roads so I don't see how I could have been fined for running through a toll booth. I wrote the rental car company asking for details of the citation and copies of the photo(s) and received a response that they had not recieved any more details than they had already provided and that I should contact the toll authority for that info. I did write the toll authority asking for proof and never got a response and haven't heard a thing about the supposed violation since.
All the car rental company was able to provide was: License plate number and state, Date and time, and a cryptic location of the violation.
I was able to decipher the location code and found out that it was a toll booth near Chicago-OHare airport. I did actually fly out of O'Hare that day but swear that I wasn't on any toll roads, and based on the time of the violation, I am pretty sure I was already sitting in the terminal.

What if I lend my car to someone and he/she runs a RLC protected intersection.
Who is actually responsible for the violation? The registered car owner (me) or the actual driver who violates the law?
If it's the driver, how can they find out who the real driver is? If it's the registered owner, will they automatically deduct some points from my driving record? Technically it's a moving violation and that normally costs us some points.
Does anyone know?
Be wary of the nannies
Some are not concerned about incremental steps to invade privacy. Speed cameras are an easy out. The excuse is, if you hadn't violated the law you wouldn't get a ticket. Will you say the same when they want to park or run a thermal camera by your home and a directional microphone?
If you never do anything illegal I guess you have nothing to be worried about. Anyone that believes photo cameras are the answer is nieve as it will only get more intrusive.
If speeding is such a concern hire 25 police officers in every town and require $1,000 in fines/tickets a day which will more than pay for their salary.
Safety has and is never the concern. It's money. If you want criminals off the the road lets get them off the road. Find out who's driving, pull them over, check for insurance, license, warrants.
Police officers are far superior to a camera and wil always be that way.
It's Not About The Money
When you're told it's not about the money it's about the money.

Hire 25 police officers to enforce speeding? Like the town of 125 residents that had a 7 man police force? And where the police chief pulled his gun and shot the fire chief in court because he was complaining about speed traps?
My feeling is that if enough people took responsibility for their own actions and worked with the system rather than attempting to circumvent the system we wouldn't be having this discussion.
The other fact is that people have demanded more and more services from their government and then when the money to pay for those services cannot be found through traditional taxing sources, other sources have to be found. The uproar from those being served is so loud over the loss of "free" services they forget how they came about in the first place. The citizens demanded them, and now that the piper has placed his bill on the table...
