Magellan Meridian Gold Questions

A friend just gave me a b&w Meridian Gold GPS unit that he no longer used (he has a newer color model).

I am trying to get familiar with it and have a couple questions.

1. The installed firmware is Rev. 5.40 Oct 14 2004. From what I could find on the Magellan website, this appears to be the latest version. Does anyone know if that is correct?

2. The Basemap is NA M Land - 1.03. There is no Detailed map installed. When I checked the Magellan website it says "There are no upgrades or maps for this product." Is that really correct? I would like to update the Basemap if one exists and also install a topo map on an SD card.

I don't have the funky serial cable to connect it to a PC, but I have seen USB versions of the cable sold on eBay, which I could buy, if necessary. I do have a card reader/writer, so I could load topo maps onto an SD card and then insert the SD card in the Meridian.

3. Does the MapSend Lite program even support the older Meridian, or am I pretty much stuck with the old Basemap that's currently installed with no chance of adding topo maps?

Thanks for any help from you experienced Meridian users. smile
