When searching along a route, how close does a POI have to be to the planned route to be found (TomTom GO 740).

How about 5.68 miles?
My TTOne NE is programmable up to 9,999 yards (5.68 miles) away from a POI by default - I checked it again using a loaded POI before I typed this. (Check out this thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13830).
For the record I've never used this distance under real world conditions; the maximum distance setting I use is 300-500 yards. Also, I usually keep it set to show/sound only when a POI is on my route.
Hope this helps.

I wonder if a GO 740 has such an option. I looked again under preferences but could not find it. Maybe it is in some illogical place? That would not be unusual I guess.
The thread you referenced seems to be about alert distances for custom POIs if I am reading it correctly. My problem is related to built-in search limits.
