Nuvi: Increase favorites beyond1000 limit?

Hi

I have a Garmin Nuvi 255 which I would like to increase the number of possible waypoint/favourites beyond the firmware imposed 1000 limit.

Does anyone know whether this can be done (via a hack) or whether this would be resolved by using a memory card?

I have exhusted this arbitrarly small number so quickly!

Thanks,
Mark

I can't fathom having more

I can't fathom having more than 1000 favorite places, but since you do, how about forgetting about the "Favorites" button under WhereTo and putting them all in a POI file named Favorites.? The GPS gives you the first 1000 in the file current.gpx -- just add the remaining entries you want and load with POI Loader.

--
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Hi BentBiker I never thought

Hi BentBiker

I never thought I'd consume 1000 points either but it was easily done - Bank Cash Points, Hardware stores, Free WiFi, Campsites, wineries....

I guess if I were to use POI Loader for my additional waypoints, I just assign a Category Name by placing them into subdirctories?

Of cource I am still very interested in finding a way to increase this arbitary limit as the fovourite button cuts out on menu navigation.

Thanks
Markus

I too would love to know if

I too would love to know if this is possible. I am limited to 500 waypoints with an 885T, and would be very happy to extend this amount.

It can be done with POI Loader, and the categories will be determined by the directory name.

But, POI's and Favorites work differently, as we all know. And for me, Favorites work much better with what I use them for.

Hopefully someone knows if this is possible.

.

The Waypoint/Favorites limitation is encoded in the firmware and there is NO WAY AROUND IT.

How do you Find them

I can not fathom...going through 1000 entries when looking for a Favorite. I keep Favorites not every place I have been in the last month. The Screen can find all banks...all Restaurants....ect why save them again?

Hi Zecpull I actually use

Hi Zecpull

I actually use the function a little differently. Favourites are handy as they tell you the closest waypoint to where you are now, in each of my sub-categories. I can be in a remote town, which I have never been to and can quite quickly locate the nearest Free Wifi point (for example).

The functiona also provides a handy search fuction which can search for text strings, making locating some item very easily (assuming you've labelled your individual Favourites sensibly).

MapSource allows you to rename the 16 default category names to what ever you like. So basically I have downloaded a large subset of waypoints (from the internet) and placed them into useful categories - Fishing tackle shops, boat ramps, dog freindly campsites etc.

Custom POI can be used exactly the same way, however they are deeper in the menu structure. If I cannot find a way of increasing this limit, I guess have to begin using them some more (currently I just use them for traffic alearts).

Does anyone know if the firmware is signed or bit check summed?

Regards
Markus

Maybe you missed the earlier post from Motorcycle Mama. THERE IS NO WAY TO MODIFY THE FIRMWARE ON THE NUVI. Many have tried, all have failed.

The computer is your file cabinet.

Use the computer and MapSource to download your waypoints/favorites. Organize the favorites and upload them as needed.

I have noticed when playing with custom poi & proximity alerting; that I have gone well above the 1000 limit; especially with schoold speed zones. However custom poi, at least on the Nuvi 255W, are not routable. But - for an example - if you have a database of free wifi spots, you can setup proximity alerts and get notified when you are driving near an area of wifi.

Sometimes you gotta be creative to make the units work better for you within the set boundaries.

Why not make your favorites

Why not make your favorites into a POI file? That why they will all be there in one file and you'll free up that 500 favorite space for other things.

Yep. Garmin's firmware is locked up tight.

People have been futzing around with it for a long time and no one has been able to modify it.

Not that he needs any but this definitely sounds like a job for turboccc grin

Yeah! Right! razz I prefer to stick within the existing boundaries of Garmin firmware. Much simpler. smile

Creating categories within favorites is simply a crazy task. Even Garmin could not do it overnight with their designers and the source code.

BTW, Garmin's code can be modified. I have seen a couple examples of this. I have also modified it a bit myself to change some predefined sounds within the firmware. The most difficult part is to reverse engineer the code. Playing with the data structures is not an easy task either.

You SURE about that?

Are you SURE about that? What would be the point of custom POIs if you couldn't route to them?

I set routes on 255W all the time...

I set routes on my nuvi 255W from custom POIs - maybe I am not understanding fgrygus' context of the term "routable"

Not so.

I think your definitely wrong about that. Try Where to? - Extras - Custom POIs then pick one and press GO.
