I'm sure Miss POI will be right back on top of things once her vacation is over.

She & Jon DESERVE this break so I guess we can ignore these SPAM postings for a few more days before Miss POI gets her sledgehammer out.

Sorry about the spam guys. We do spend a lot of time making sure that these do not pop up when we are home.

Miss POI

We have noticed that over

We have noticed that over the last few days we have had an increase in spam. This could be to the recent article that came out in the dredge reports or some other publicity that might have us looking like a great way to increase add clicks.

We are clearing them out and blocking them every morning as we find them.

Miss POI

Don't feel bad--

Everybody is seeing an increase in spam e-mails, blog spam, and other annoyances.

Thanks again for all your hard work, building and maintaining this great community!

Its a shame you have to spend so much time "taking out the trash." sad But, I guess that's the nature of the internet.

Thanks, for all of the good work. I really enjoy this site!

Admin/site owner needs to add a "report this post" feature to ever post

good example is videohelp.com (I'm a member there) spam posts don't last minutes before someone reports the spam to admin right way

example for "report this post"

DEATH TO SPAM!

Heck..I run my own mail server at home.
Granted, its not a public board but the spam is HUGE.
I use live spam DB's(spam assassin) and disallow any connections from any IP blocks from 'overseas'.
Whacking IP's from overseas alone reduced spam by 80%!
No processing/checking/evaluation. Any such connection goes straight to the bit bucket.

Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings.

A husband and wife enter.

Man (Eric Idle): You sit here, dear.
Wife (Graham Chapman in drag): All right.
Man (to Waitress): Morning!
Waitress (Terry Jones, in drag): Morning!
Husband: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg, sausage, and bacon; egg and spam; egg, bacon, and spam; egg, bacon, sausage, and spam; spam, bacon, sausage, and spam; spam, egg, spam, spam, bacon, and spam; spam, sausage, spam, spam, bacon, spam, tomato, and spam;
Vikings (starting to chant): Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam, spam, spam, egg, and spam; spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, baked beans, spam, spam, spam...
Vikings (singing): Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam, egg, sausage, and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Husband: Why can't she have egg, bacon, spam, and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Husband: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam, egg, sausage, and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam (crescendo through next few lines)
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!)
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg, bacon, spam, and sausage without the spam.
Wife (shrieks): I don't like spam!
Husband: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, beaked beans, spam, spam, spam, and spam!
Vikings (singing): Spam, spam, spam, spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Husband: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then?
Waitress: You mean spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings (singing elaborately): Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Spam spam spam spam!

Food fights

When I was a kid in school (50s and 60s) the government commodities program gave big tins of spam to the schools for their hot lunch program. Our school cooks came up wth this idea of pouring a honey mustard glaze over it and baking it ... they called it "glazed luncheon loaf" hoping the name wouild somehow make it more palitable.

Of course nobody ate it, but it was wonderful for lunchroom food fights.

Spam

Actually, Spam can be taken care of by clever script writing, And staying a step ahead of them with captcha.
If your windmill is not present you must pass the Captcha test to post because the chance of being a spammer has increased 10 fold. Then the Admin's work load won't have to focus on spam, and we don't have to read it either.

In my opinion, (you know what they say about opinions), having to authenticate every time I posted would turn me off pretty quick. Probably a lot of other folks too.

Much easier would be to just set an approval flag on all new members and approve the first x number of posts. X could vary by some set of how well the approver felt that day.

It doesn't take long to figure out if a new user is a spammer or not, especially if they don't know there is moderation in place for new members. Their posts just don't show up as quickly.

Of course this is In my opinion also, (you know what they say about opinions) and I do!

That's why I said non windmill members, hoping to create a reason to get a windmill faster.
The method you mention would create more work for Maryann and take her away from other things she could be doing for the betterment of the factory if she had to verify every message and okay it for post.

So maybe just a captcha the first and every x number of posts to verify a real person, without a windmill. And of course a windmill gives you vested rights and you no longer are a security risk for spam.

I thought SPAM was "Stuff Posing As Meat".

I kind of like the first description best:)
"Shoulder of Pork and Ham"

Name origin
Introduced on July 5, 1937, the name "Spam" was chosen when the product, whose original name was far less memorable (Hormel Spiced Ham), began to lose market share. The name was chosen from multiple entries in a naming contest. A Hormel official once stated that the original meaning of the name "Spam" was "Shoulder of Pork and Ham".[6] According to writer Marguerite Patten in Spam – The Cookbook, the name was suggested by Kenneth Daigneau, an actor and the brother of a Hormel vice president, who was given a $100 prize for coming up with the name.[7] At one time, the official explanation was that the name was a portmanteau of "Spiced Ham". According to the British documentary-reality show "1940's House", when SPAM was offered by the US to those affected by WWII in the UK, SPAM stood for Specially Processed American Meats. Many jocular backronyms have been devised, such as "Something Posing As Meat", "Specially Processed Artificial Meat", "Stuff, Pork and Ham", "Spare Parts Animal Meat" and "Special Product of Austin Minnesota".[8]

According to Hormel's trademark guidelines, Spam should be spelled with all capital letters and treated as an adjective, as in the phrase "SPAM luncheon meat".
