Cannot Create Categories Garmin 855

Guys and Gals,

I am fairly computer savvy. Just came from TomTom 530. I have struggled to create categories for my custom POI's. I just cannot understand the file structure. I have tried multiple iterataions.

On my desktop there is "Garmin POI" folder. Within the folder there is a folder "Friends and Family". Within this folder there is a .gpx of the files and .bmp with the same name (both .gpx and .bmp share the same name).

When I point my latest garmin POI installer to the "Garmin POI" folder it copies the data to the device. I launch the Garmin, click "extras" then the "custom POI" tab comes up and when this is clicked all the POI's show up. THEY ARE NOT categorized to the "Friends and Family" tab. What I am doing wrong????

I have tried another folder within a folder. Then the POI loader states that .gpx or .csv files not found.

This was so easy in Tom Tom.

Please help.

If you have only one subfolder with a POI file in it, POI Loader won't create a category since it isn't necessary. As soon as you create a second subfolder with a POI file in it, the categories will show up.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I have tried...the POI

I have tried...the POI loader states that a valid .gpx file cannot be found.

So this is what I have...

Main Folder "Garmin POI"
"Friends and Family" folder
friends and family.gpx
friends and family.bmp
"FlyingJ" folder
flyingJ.gpx
flyingJ.bmp

I point the Garmin POI loader to the "Garmin POI" folder that is on my desktop.

I have tried the following

Main folder "Garmin POI"
"Friends and family" folder
friends and family.bmp
"Friends and family" folder
friends and family.gpx

The Garmoin POI loader or (.gpi creator) will not recognize the "Garmin POI" folder.

This is very frustrating.

In fact using the express method (I am aware of the radio box for skipping files) the flyingJ POI's will not even load.

Thanks,

Leonard

Poi Loader

Hi Leonard..

When using the Poi loader, Use your parent directory on your pc(Garmin poi folder) then select manual for settings mode, this should help..

Good luck..

Joe

Joe..thanks but I think I

Joe..thanks but I think I have found the answer and I am not sure why...

I have to reset the 855 to almost reload internally the POI's. Shutting down does not help. Pulling the battery out does. Once the 855 reboots it recognizes the new file.

I think this is a software glitch. But I got it to work.

I was looking at another

I was looking at another post http://www.poi-factory.com/node/22652 that the user had the same problem and had to take the battery out.

That's the way the 855

That's the way the 855 works. One has to pull the battery to perform a reset in order to get it to read newly installed POIs.

Amazing...after hours of frustration

Can this be forwarded to Garmin for a "Hotfix?"

There's nothing to "fix".

There's nothing to "fix". That's the way it was designed.

Edit. The 885 doesn't have an "operating" battery. It has a battery that keeps the memory alive to avoid losing favorites and settings. Ordinarily, the 885 needs to be plugged into a power source to operate. It wasn't designed to use "off power".

If so....why not document it?

This knowledge would have saved many a frustration moment. All Garmin would have to state is that "for users creating custom POI's YOU NEED TO RESET THE DEVICE.

Perhaps this should be posted to the their FAQ section.

With regards to the "hotfix" why can't the device check on startup if a new POI file is created? Does it mean automatic hard restart on every startup? If so, then make it so. The end user shouldn't have to scour web pages for insights as to how to use their machine properly.

This is not correct. Both the nuvi 8x0/8x5 have an internal removable battery that operates the unit off of battery power for up to 4 hours. See:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=33922#specsT...

The nuvi 5000 is the unit you're likely thinking of that does NOT contain a battery and will only operate while plugged into a 12v power source.

Agree, Document it

I agree with you Leonard, it should be documented. I had the same problem with the red light and speed camera POI's. Drove me crazy for four days till I figured out I had to pull the battery. I realized it when I deleted all the POI's but the traffic info was still showing. We shouldn't have to pull our hair out over something that should be noted somewhere. I think it would help if there was something in the FAQ section. Maybe a note on Gary Hayman's Tips and Tricks web site too....should check before I say that smile

Take care
