Comparing Garmin 885t with 765t

Has anybody compared Garmin 765t with 885t?

Their street prices are close, 885t has speech recognition which I care less.
I am looking for speedy and accurate map directions with lane assistance. This gets tricky on the freeways with multiple intersection close to each other.

Thanks

Thanks

I upgraded from a basic Nuvi 200 to the 885T. I wasn't that keen on the voice recognition when I was looking for an upgrade, but I'm fairly pleased with the 885. As I learn the quirks and shortcut commands, it gets easier. I do like the ability to have the unit do things for me without having to punch things in through the screen. Now I yell at it to find addresses, POI, give weather reports and tell me about traffic so I can make rude gestures to other drivers while reprogramming the GPS.

As far as accuracy - define accuracy. It uses the same routing and estimating algorithms of the others in the line so any address that is not one or 2 doors off an intersection is less than spot on.

After 2 months I'm still learning what it can and can't do, but overall it was worth the $399 I paid for it.

Both good units, just different features

I also went back and forth trying to decide which model to buy. I decided on the 765T primarily because it was available locally at Sam's and the price was incredibly low! I was not as interested in voice commands and preferred the improved bluetooth (A2DP), and 3D building graphics. The 765T has 4Gig of built in memory, I do not know how much memory on the 885T.

I did try a TomTom GO740 Live and after 3 weeks, returned it and went for the 765T. The TomTom was a good unit, but the display was nowhere as bright as the Garmin, and when you look at the cost of Google Services (via the built in GSM cell phone) of $10/month, plus the cost of the TomTom maps, it would cost over $150/year!!! Garmin has lifetime map upgrades for around $90 at Amazon! MSN also offers a lifetime option! None available from TomTom.

But back to the garmin units, the 885T has voice activation and a remote! It comes with the MSN Direct receiver. It's free initially but requires a subscription after the free period expires, where the 765T has the free lifetime FM Traffic receiver. I purchased the MSN receiver for my 765T from Amazon, and it came with a one year service. I like the ability to look at gas prices, weather, stocks, flight information and most important, Traffice updates - I think the MSN traffic reports are a bit quicker than the free FM traffic.

Battery life is supposed to be better on the 885T, my 765T barely goes 1 hour! Since most of the time its used in the car, that is not relevant for me, but if you plan to hike with it, the 885T is supposed to run a little longer and the battery is replaceble, so you may carry more than one battery and that can give you longer usage.

Another difference, the 765T uses an SD card, the 885T uses a microSD card. Most microSD cards come with an SD adapter, in case you want to read the card on your PC with an SD card reader.

One last thing, the 885T comes with Games, the 765T does not.

So there you have it, it really boils down to preference, both units will give you good GPS navigation.

There goes my 2 cents...

The Buy.com had 855T (refurbished by Garmin) for $200, unfortunately they were gone very fast.

I will get one soon.

Amazon had the 855 as the gold box deal of the day for $199.99

I bought a brand new 855 last Thursday from Amazon on their gold box deal of the day for $199.99 including shipping.

Thanks for your inputs and

Thanks for your inputs and time.

As you indicated, 855T seems to have more functionality and I am leaning towards that, then I read the gpsmagazine.com which says that "if you do not need voice command" then get 765T, I guess they are referring to the price point which is not much of difference now.

Buy.com had 855T for $200 (refurbished by Garmin) for $200 but unfortunately they were gone very fast.

Thanks again.

I am looking for 855T, which has more functionality and two front firing speakers; buy.com had them for $200 (refurbished by Garmin) but sold out quickly.

I have never heard of a 855T model from Garmin

Garmin has a 855 and 885T available in the US with NA maps and a 865T model for Europe with FM receiver with European maps.

They have a 885T model with bluetooth and MSN Receiver. The one that was on sale at buy.com was the refurbished 885T. That was a very good deal for that unit.

Which model ?

It seems that it may be unclear exactly which 8x5t model you're talking about.

The thread title says 855 but the post states a 885t?

The 885t is exactly like the 855 but ADDS the Bluetooth function and also INCLUDES the MSN receiver.

I went from a 660 to the 885T and very happy. Plus it was cheap I got mine at Buydig.com for 382.00

I am sorry for the typo

I am sorry for the typo (855), I was referring to 885T.

what is important

choose the one that best suits your needs. If voice recognition is not important don't get it. Same with bluetooth, European maps, or any other feature.
If price is a concern you may be able to get one with the extra features you don't want or need at a lower price. I'm happy with my c550 and nuvi 765. I especially like the "lane assist" when traveling unfamiliar roads with the 765.

Sam's Club Price

rafacq wrote:

A few days ago, I noticed that Costco had the 765T for $279 in their flier. I had purchased one at Sam's in June for $347. The next day (of course) they reduced it to $329 and they refunded the difference.

Today I received a letter from Sam's in the mail suggesting that I get the Garmin firmware update to prevent the issues that were plaguing the model, since I was a valuable customer... or they said I could simply return the unit to any store.

I saw the posting (above) that the new Sam's price was $279, matching Costco's, and I went to the store to try to get a $50 credit. They said that they only price match for 1 week. I offered to return my unit and purchase one for the now reduced price, but that I really wanted to 'buy back' the one that I would be returning (since it works!!!). They said no. I could return it and purchase a new one.

I spoke with the manager and explained that I was reluctant to give up a working unit, but that I really wanted the $50 savings. He approved it and I now have my working unit (which incidentally had been replaced by Garmin several weeks ago) AND $50 in my pocket. What a deal! A 765T that works for $279.

Overall, I saved nearly $72 (including tax) by watching this forum and being persistent!!!

and that is how it works

My experience is most managers will try to accomodate a good customer.

Oh bless you

I wanted to buy the 765t even though it has had some mixed reviews, and quality issues with some of them. It is on sale via mailorder from Costco, but I dont like having to ship it back, if there is something wrong with it. So, thank you for telling us that it is inside the Sams Clubs! I called my Sams, and yes, they have them there.

Still 279

I was in Sams tonight and still there for $279.Looks like they had plenty of them.

You can buy from Costco.com and if something happens, return it to a local Costco store.

And regarding managers, I once went back to get a coupon applied to the costco purchase of a mattress, a month after I bought it at full price. They said no. I asked if they were really going to make me lug the mattress out of my house and all the way back to the store to return and rebuy at the $100 off price. The manager gave me my 100 bucks.

The folks at my local Costco used to do that. I purchased an item that went on sale a couple of weeks later, and when I asked them to adjust the price, they told me that they only price match (even to their own prices) for a relatively short time. I said that I would just return the item and rebuy it, and they refunded the difference.

Recently, a SlingShot camera backpack had a $10 instant rebate on it. I had purchased the item a couple of months ago for $69.99 and it was now $59.99 after rebate. I went to the desk and they refused to refund the difference. I again said that I could just return it and rebuy it, and the manager said that was up to me if I wanted to do that. I just figured that for the $10 it wasn't worth buying a new one and returning it with my old receipt, since the store was busy and I had already checked out.

Bye bye $10.

I believe you will find

I believe you will find other differences not mentioned above, significant to me at least between the 765T and 885T. The statement used above that unless you need voice recognition go with the 765T was probably not about price but about overall features. Since this has been discussed before the only two I will mention are on the 765T being able to change what info shows on the map screen, not available on the 885T. (Switch between elevation, time to destination, distance to destination, etc...)
Another, if I remember correctly what others have said, there is no "folder" for recently found cities.

For me, having a removable

For me, having a removable battery is a big deal. That and the voice activation are the two things I like.

885 vs 765

If you're not happy with it, you don't have to ship it back.

You can return it to the store and they will refund your money. And if you paid any shippin gcharges they will refund that too.

I do agree a removable

I do agree a removable battery can be great at times. That's a plus I forgot about for the 885T.

Games

Don't forget, the 885 can play games, which my 765T cannot!

Does anyone know why? Is there specific h/w requirement to play games, a chip perhaps is not on the 765T?

Costco's return policy?

Heading out this weekend with a friend that has a Costco card... Gonna finally get that new 765T smile

Does anyone know about Costco's return policy? I heard it changed in 2007, electronics only carry a 90 day return. Sounds like Wal Mart's policy, 90 days.

Larry

Return policy

Yes, Costco has a 90 day return policy.

Comparing Garmin 885t with 765t

I really cant compare the 2. I only have the 765t. But, so far, I am happy with it. I can customize my routed with waypoints. Plays customed mp3 alerts, music. A crisp bright screen. It had some quirkyness with the touch screen. Sometimes when wanting an icon on the bottom of the screen, a different icon would engage. They arent mis shits by me, they are misinterpretations somehow with the screen. I did do a screen calibration, and that seems to have fixed it (fingers crossed). I got it at Sams Cluv a rew days ago, right in the store for $279. Why buy mailorder from Costco when you can buy instore at Sams.

GPS receivers do not have a

GPS receivers do not have a 90 day return policy at Costco. Only the following categories have a 90 day policy:
televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones.

Anything else you can return whenever for a full refund.

885t more precise

i had 765 for few days and i returned it at best buy because it gave me directions to turn after i made the turn:) i was in center of intersection but the 765 would tell me that i still have 50 meters to the intersection . aparently the 765 garmin use a diferent gps receiver i used a 755 before but was no diferent, i am very pleased with 885 one advantege is that you can control the way how detour is calculated 1 km 5 km or you can choose to avoid wich route you want. other than that the bluetooth is not loud and clear enough and fm transmitter is useless gets covered by radio stations while you drive like any other garmins i triyed
