Sorry .... (login troubles)

Sorry .........

If you see my ID (ghayman) listed several times in the 'OnLine Users' area -- I want to apologize.

I just switched to IE8 after Firefox 3.5.1 started giving me loads of problems and now, for the POI Factory site, every time I login and move to another page I get automatically logged out and have to re-login in again on the new page -- that is creating what looks like me being logged in several times.

Both Jonathan (POI Factory guru) and I have been trying to solve the problem for several days now, but attempts are failing. But, we are still at it.

Apparently, no one else has reported similar difficulties so the problem most probably exists in my settings coupled with the new IE8.

So please understand why my ID appears multiple times -- it's just me signing in again when new pages appear.

Sound like your cookie for the site isn't being saved or is corrupt. Try removing the cookie for this site, and be sure you are have IE8 to allow cookies for this site. To check go to Tools-> Internet Options->Privacy->click Sites button, and search through the list for poifactory.com and poi-factory.com

IE8

in IE8, there are a number of different settings ... if you delete (manually or automatically on exit)your history, cookies etc., you should check 'on' the "Preserve Favorites Website Data" (new in IE8). Be sure that you have POI Factory bookmarked as a favorite, and this will avoid you trashing your POI Factory cookie each time,

The Reason I

didn't install it. I have had the update for weeks, but I won't install it. Was waiting to see if there are problems, and there are.

If you have done it recently you might have a restore point to back it out. I believe a restore point is done prior to the MS software updates.

good luck with the problem.

Thanks for ideas

jfulton & djs.
Thanks for the reply.

All that stuff already done
--IE8 set to allow cookies for 'poi-factory.com' and 'poifactory.com'
--Preserve Favorites Website Data checked in Delete Browsing History page
--poi-factory is book marked as a Favorite

Even poi-factory listed in Internet Options | Security | Trusted Sites

I do not have IE set to delete cookies upon closing.

Right now I focusing in on
C:/Documents and Settings/Owner (folder title)/Cookies

this is where all cookies are stored on my computer
There are 11 that relate to poi-factory
line items 1-3 and 5-11 All have a Size of 0KB while #4 has a size of 1KB.

Most other cookies in the listing for other sites have a file size of 1KB

This may mean that something is not being picked up and recorded in my Cookie area -- but I haven't been able to pin point a different control that is preventing this.

Thanks for you insights. If you think of something else, even if Jonathan and I have already gone through that, let us know. We may have missed something.

I'd second that or at the very least delete all but the single 1KB cookie.

Very strange. I have been using IE8 in all my computers since it first came out and it never has happened to me. It always remembers my login info on this site and is automatic.

It must have something to do with your cookie settings or security settings. Try resetting your security level using the reset all security level to default settings buttom at the bottom of the security page.

isp

Does your ISP assign unique IP's to every user or does it share IP's (Hughesnet does this and probably some others) I have had similar problems as yours on a wiki. I log in then go to another page and must login again. Although sometimes it works normally. This is on 3 different computers, operating systems and browsers. The only thing I can think of that causes it is someone on my IP is also using the site.

Just checked in both IE8 and firefox, they both are only keeping one cookie for poi-factory. I would delete all the ones dealing with poi-factory especially the 0k ones.

IE8

I work at a college in Arizona and we use IE8, but it gives our Webmail hell. Just aheads up. Other than that it works fine.

Sorry ... Continued

I still continue to be sorrry.

You may have noticed that for the past two weeks my ID may be appearing multiple times in the Online Users area. That is due to my recent difficulity in logging in. It sometimes takes me 15 attempt to login and then when I change a page or visit a topic I get logged out and have to do multiple logins to get on again. It's never the same twice and, of course, it's a pain in the a**.

I've been working on this changing all sorts of preferences and I even dumped Internet Explorer 8 and went back to Internet Explorer 7. I have difficulity with Firefox 3.5.1 too.

Sometimes I can last several pages and then a sponsored ad appears and I am knocked off. I don't know if it is the ad or a conincidence. I have poi-factory as a trusted site and have permitted cookies.

Still I don't know what the problem is and since others haven't complained -- it must be with me somewhere, but with two weeks of agonizing searching I haven't, AS YET, found the culprit setting. I am beginning to think it might be be with an Internet Options 'Advanced Setting' which are mainly Greek to me.

So if you see my name in the Online users area listed multiple times, you know it's me pulling my hair, what little there is left, out.

Yes, I've tried the suggestions that some of you kind and helpful people have furnished. But keep them coming anyway.

I would stick with one

I would stick with one browser or the other. Too many changes, too many browsers, makes the changes hard to remember.

That said, and since I despise IE, (I use Linux), try using Firefox, either the 3.0xx or 3.5 and use the add on finder to install Adblock Plus. Don't fool with any of the other iteration of Adblock, most aren't maintained.

Then try your luck and see if that helps any. I think you still have my email,(Frank) so you're welcome to email me and try to work it out.

Spyware/MalWare?

Gary Hayman

Are you sure there isn't something residing on your computer that shouldn't be?

Download Malwarebytes and run it. Also consider running Spybot as well. I run both Norton and/or Macaffee on a couple of computers and stuff can still get by. Once on my son's computer (go figure) I needed to run both of these several times to remove items (that the paid-for programs were unable to do... grrr), before things got cleared up, after behaving similarly to what you have discribed here.

Just my 2 cents

IE8

Have also used IE8 from day one. Never had a problem. It keeps me logged in to POI-factory.
I have Vista 64

Gary I use internet exploer

Gary I use internet exploer 8 and have no problems for Poi Factory. It must be a setting that needs re-setting.Have you tried this handy tool http://support.microsoft.com/fixit?fi=50198#tab0 ? On the left side of page select the problem area and then look down the list. You will get option for automatic or manual fix.

I’ve had IE 8 from some time now and although I do find it to a hog for CPU resources, I’ve not had issues that you’ve described. I soon learned to run the IE8 in ‘Compatibility Mode’ and have only one complaint. That is when I open my favourites my cursor movements in the area lag until I click the Blue Arrow at the top to ‘PIN’ the Favourites. Then the cursor moves normally in that area.

I’ve been using Superantispy for some time now and find that it is one of the strongest, best ‘Anti’ out there. I have tried other programs but found that Superantispy sniffed out and killed all the nasty’s that others missed or couldn’t remove.

A good Trojan sniffer/killer, AVG, Zone Alarm, SpyBot and Hijackthis all have residence on my laptop and they continue to protect me from the host of malignant pieces of garbage out there.

I don't like IE8....It slowed my pc down.

At the moment --- its working!!!

Right now -- for some reason, using Firefox 3.5.1 POI factory is working like gangbusters for me (it's about 1am). I haven't done anything.

I have noticed that right now there are no supported ads on the right side or at the bottom of the pages.

Do you think that they were the culprits that were kicking me off (un-logging me it) each time I changed a page? Perhaps some setting in the Internet Options Advanced area objected to the ads. I don't know what.

Right now I'm smiling. I hope in the morning I can say the same.

Thanks for those who made some suggestions. I did get the Malwarebytes program that some kind person suggested and did a through cleaning (2:15) [I like the program]. Not much popped up as I constantly use Registry Mechanic, CCleaner, AdAware, Clary Utilities, Spyware Doctor, Windows Defender, and CWShredder, to help me regularly -- but I do like the program.

My fingers are crossed.

Ads may have caused the problems

mgarledge wrote:

Wow -- I never thought of that. I figured that POI-Factory was creating a little revenue to help them maintain the site.

The ads at the bottom were mainly GPS ads with pictures of devices. The Ads on the sides were animated -- but I didn't pay attention to what they were advertising.

Perhaps, running Malwarebytes, fixed the problem -- as the ads are not there today.

I also upped Firefox to v. 3.5.2 this morning -- and all is working well.

I did retest with IE 7 and I still had difficulty. I'm going to change that to IE 8 and see what happens, but currently, Firefox would be my Browser of choice.
