I just picked up a Garmin 255W today. I'm new to the whole GPS thing. But so far I'm pretty impressed with this unit and how much tweaking can be done to customize it. I did my map update and have installed some new poi's. Looks like fun!!

welcome

everything I have learned in terms of tweaking my 765T to the way I want to use it, as well as getting around a couple of Garmin firmware fiascos, I have learned from the great folks here at poi-factory, and Gary Hayman's terrific site.

you will be very happy you have found both.

Hi

And welcome, lotsa of info here.

tweaking garmin

first thing I did was added new car icon mach 5, then custom poi of walmart and bj with sound and icons, then changed the american samantha to talk more local. thanks for all the aid on this site to do so.

With POI and Photo

With POI and Photo Navigation you can turn your GPS into your own tour guide when you travel. Also great for avoiding speed and red light cameras and traps.

Best Advice to a New User

My best advice to a new GPS user ...

Play with your GPS all the time. Use it to navigate to work and home again, when you go grocery shopping, etc. Play with all the different features of the GPS.

This way, you will learn the ins and outs of the gps quickly.

Then when you are out and about for real, you can quickly navigate to the nearest coffee shop for a coffee, find the nearest gas station when you need it, find out exactly where you are when you are out of town and need to call 911, etc, without fumbling around trying to figure out how to find that gps feature when you need it for real.

Welcome

Welcome! I became a 255WT owner last month and love the unit.

Congratulations

Welcome to the club!

Well, ewayne1941

Welcome to the POI-Factory. This site has been known to teach old dogs new tricks, but be careful! This site is addictive and has also been known to cause distress between family members. Especially if you have only one computer and two want to keep up on the happenings.

Welcome & watch for Theft

Welcome to the site and the GPS world. Make sure you keep your GPS out of sight when you park your car. There are people out there breaking into cars for them.

OK

Thanks for the heads up on that, I don't think I would leave it in anyway, heat buildup inside car can't be good for it as well. It really is a shame we have to lock up everything now, when I was growing up, we never locked anything, even left keys inside.
