Doesn't get more obvious than this!

Batavia IL is considering adding Red Light Cams. The mayor spent an hour watching a busy intersection in town. He refers to that intersection as a potential "Cash Cow". His quote is below:

"Thinking I knew where Batavia's cash cow was, I went out to the intersection and witnessed 43 right-turn-on-red violations," the mayor said.

So true

Unfortunately, it's all about revenue. It has never been about safety. That is the cloak they use to hide the truth.

So stop and don't give them

So stop and don't give them any revenue. If everyone stoped??????

Ban the cameras

onestep wrote:

These things are there for revenue only. If everyone stopped within the parameters of where the camera was attempting to measure the stop and there were not enough violations, they would rig it some other way so they would get more violations. They may have already have done that. Or maybe they will try to come up with some other "violations" to try to police. It's all about getting your money one way or the other. These things need to be banned!

I don't really have a problem with RLC's

Like the above posters have mentioned, I like the heads up warning, but since I feel I drive safely and appropriately, I do not feel threatened with Red Light Cameras.

I have seen mentions of "right turn on red" violations and I do not see how an RLC detects these. Is that done strictly by viewing video capture at the intersections? I don't see how a still photograph could be used to prove or disprove a "right turn on red" violation.

Strongly agree with johnc's statement with a still photo being useless proof. Have plenty of RLC's in Maryland, but never heard of a right turn on red violation here YET lol........

Video

Newer cameras record the images as a stream of video, so they get to see if you actually stopped for the turn.

I suspect that in this type of environment they need to manually examine each cycle . . .

The cameras are triggered using a radar set to monitor the stop line. When the light is red, movement across the line triggers the camera. The video and radar speed display will show if the vehicle came to a complete stop before proceeding.

Amazing!

The citie's should come out and say what RLC are there for in the first place.
It's all about the money first / safty second.

Just another tax.

Just another tax.

I've been nabbed two times

I've been nabbed two times for right turn on red in Maryland at the same intersection. Yes, I just don't learn. Still pics show my brake lights on before I get into the intersection, so that is no evidence. But...they also provide you with a code you can enter to watch the video online. It showed me clearly not coming to a complete stop.

The red light cameras get more people for not coming to a complete stop when turning right than blowing the red light going straight. Very few people blow through the light while almost NO ONE comes to a complete stop before turning right. The camera near me flashes at every single light change, sometimes mosre than once. It is cranking out tickets nearly every minute of the day.

Need Practice

Well, I'm gonna need to practice coming to a complete stop before turning right on red. Same with stop signs. If I can definitely see that the road is clear while approaching the intersection, I don't do the complete stop thing. BUT I really don't want a ticket, so...gotta practice!

Where is there one in MD?

I hope they get a new mayor!

I hope they get a new mayor!

Haha

Nice, he doesn't even appear to pretend to be concerned with anything other than money. Well, at least that mayor is honest about that.

Honesty

Archer wrote:

Actually, they probably shouldn't. At least he was honest. He didn't try to hide the fact it was a "cash cow", and safety wasn't really the concern. Hahaha (really it's kinda sad, but what are you gonna do?)

What did you expect from another Ill. community.

What did you expect from another Illinois community?
I think this is going to be a precurser of things to come as the cities, towns & communities that are strapped for money will be doing in the name of safety. I'm originally from the Chicago area now in the Tucson area and I can see it happening all over.

Solution

I no longer turn right-on-red at posted red light camera intersections. I wait through the red cycle for the green light before turning right. I feel right-on-red turns are too much of a liability at those intersections equiped with cameras. So, I wait. No one can fault you with a right-on-green turn...

The decision whether-or-not to turn right-on-red is wholly that of the driver. Right-on-red turns are not mandatory.

Yes, at busy intersections waiting through the red cycle causes more congestion as a line forms behind me. Some times quite a bit more. And, yes, I am usually honked-at. (I have - on a few occasions - later gotten the finger.) But, that is better than contesting a $100 ticket given in error. What indication or assurance do I (or you) have the camera is functioning properly?

Sorry to my fellow drivers...I'm just not willing to take on any liability to help the traffic move faster. As they say...eventually, no good deed goes unpunished. So, best not to even take the risk.

Same here..on occasion

I've found myself doing the same thing...
And the result has mostly been irate drivers and backed up traffic.

Hey..its all about the 'saftey' right? NOT

I live here in the Peoples Republic of Illinois.
(I'm just waiting for the rolling blackouts and treebark soup.)
