Cape May, NJ

On a trip to Cape May, NJ last week I saw what I thought could be a speed camera (Pitsburgh Ave) and was wondering if anyone knew if it was.

What I saw was an electronic sign that indicated the speed of passing vehicles BUT as the car in front of me went pass it I saw a flash of light like a camera flash. The car was moving faster then the speed limit. I have never seen a speed camera so I have no point of reference. I did not see Cape May listed here as a locality that has enforcement cameras.

What you may have seen

What you may have seen was a portable or mobile unit. Typically the speed cams listed in the file are permanent units mounted on standalone poles. Often these are in groups of 3 poles, one for the camera and 2 for the strobe lights, but there are also units that have everything in a single box about a foot square and 12-14 inches deep.

Yes it was a mobile unit

as it was mounted on a trailer. I have seen many of these electronic displays that show the speed of passing vehicles, BUT this one appeared to be more then the simple display warning, because It seemed to have extra equipment attached plus the bright flash that I saw.

And most drivers

Are so used to seeing these "speed warning" displays they no longer pay that much attention to them. Nothing like telling the driver he was doing this speed in that speed zone and that's why the ticket will come in the mail.

This wasn't in a construction zone by any chance?

No construction

but one of the major routes in and out of town.

Well you couldn't get a speeding ticket there when I was there on a Sat. morning about a month ago. That was a good 1/2hr plus of stop and go traffic.

You were probably on

Lafayette St. I am refering to Pitsburg Ave which runs from Beach Drive towards the north end of Lafayette, and intersects just before you exit Cape May. Lafayette is stop & go most days, Pitsburg isn't.
