StreetPilot ColorMap Antique! :)

I just picked up an old-school Garmin StreetPilot ColorMap. Is there anyone who is very familiar with this product, or still using one in their vehicle?

I have some questions with regards to loading POI's and such, and have been unable to find answers online, so far.

I have ordered the data transfer cord, but have not yet received it, so I'm trying to familiarize myself with the MapSource product.

I have MapSource v. 6.15.6, and MetroGuide North America v8.

I discovered the program MetroGold, but at this time do not believe that the StreetPilot ColorMap is capable of auto-routing, making the MetroGold program unnecessary for my purposes.

I've been downloading POI collections from various sites, and using GPSBabel have been able to import them into the MapSource program as *.GDB files, and subsequently see them on the North America map.

I'd like to learn how to "categorize" the POI's, and then make them "stay." For example, one has the coords for all WalMarts. I'd like to name the Waypoint category "WalMart" and then add another set of POI's that are banks and categorize them as "Banks."

At the moment I can only figure out how to load one set of POI's at a time.

Any help, ideas, or moral support welcome!!

Thanks - from the Antique Gadget Princess! smile

Loading POIs

Not sure about your unit, however with most Garmins, each time you load POIs it erases previous entries. The solution is to have multiple POIs in a folder and then loading that folder to the GPS. This is a much discussed issue and you should find a lot of information by searching this site. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/87

StreetPilot ColorMap

I'm not familiar with your model, but I had a Street Pilot III which I think was close to what you have. Mine might have been a little newer model. The bottom line is the only thing I could do with my SPIII was load routes and what we called waypoints back then. There was no way to categorize them, and POIs were unheard of. My SPIII had no internal memory for maps, it had a 128MB memory stick that you could only get from Garmin, and they weren't cheap. On a trip from Wisconsin to Washington, then to Tulsa and back to Wisconsin, I had to take a laptop so I could reload a new set of maps when we got to Spokane. My 2610 would not do POIs either, the first model I owned that would is my present 2820.

Garmin's site has this on yours:

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

.

I'm pretty sure that that unit does not support Custom POIs. And from looking at the specs, it looks like it will only hold 100 Waypoints.
