Factory Tours

My husband loves to take factory tours, and we can easily detour our RV to them along our travels. We have a book or two listing factory tours, but I wonder if there's an electronic listing I can download to my GPS?

Great idea

Sounds like a great idea for the "what POI's would you like to see here" project thread. This link to the Travel Channel's Made in America show might make a good starting point http://search.travelchannel.com/search?p=UK&srid=S1-4&lbc=tr....

There are already POI file made from other shows, like "Diners, Drives & Dives," so this could fit right into the theme!

Don't Forget...

Be sure to include the POI-Factory, factory tour in your list. Miss POI & Jon just love showing off their "baby." Just remember, hard hats and safety glasses are required on the tour. Making POIs can be dangerous work and they take safety very seriously. mrgreen laugh out loud mrgreen laugh out loud rolleyes (I know, I'm a sick puppy)

WI Cheese Factories

I have posted a Cheese factory tour POI if you are close to WI. My wife and I like doing tours also.

We have found some really good places with very inexpensive cheese to buy. Gorgonzola for $3.60 a pound is one of our favorites. Also cheddar or colby for $2.60. We are still looking for a place that makes parmesian and feta.

We have actually had schools call us to set up a tour;) I thought it was really cool.

Here is a map of few wine factories in southwest Michigan: http://www.michiganwines.com/map.php?page=tour_southwest

Sorry, I am not a local to the area but did travel to a few on them all within driving distance.

Factory Tours

I know this runs contrary to the ideal of using a GPS to locate options, but here's a URL that can help ID tour choices:

Just as an FYI, I heard back from the webmaster and they are not willing to share their info for a POI file...

Tillamook Cheese Factory

The Tillamook Cheese Factory just north of Tillamook Oregon is a good self tour. They have an overhead view of the plant floor, a sample area, cheese and gift shops, a decent grill, and an excellent ice cream shop.

No trip up Hwy 101 should miss a stop here even if it is only for an ice cream cone.

From my Legend GPS...

N45 29.056 W123 50.654

4175 Highway 101 North
Tillamook, OR 97141
(503) 815-1300

I am sorry to read they will

I am sorry to read they will not share...I wonder if they even know what GPS is and how valuable it can be.

Common Response

alisk wrote:

For some unknown reason, this seems to be the response of most companies. They want you to go to their website for location information. Probably to support their advertisers or hoping that you will buy something.

He said this site was commercial due to the ads. I had forgot, but if you do not register and login, there are Google ads here.

I said this was a free site and that I would provide a link back to his site as the source for many of the entries... No dice!!!

But, lets not let that stop us! I still think this is a cool idea for a POI and I will make it based on the entries we get here!!

Jelly Belly

I know I am late to the thread, but I saw this post and I had to comment. The Jelly Belly was one of the best free factory tours I had ever been on. Almost as good as Ben & Jerry's Ice Creme - http://www.benjerry.com/scoop-shops/factory-tours/
