The nuvis are not. Other Garmin devices might be.

I have an old Garmin GPS 38

I have an old Garmin GPS 38 that works with S&T (and with Delorme). But quite frankly there are issues, both in coming up with an affordable connection for the GPS and keeping it powered, as well as the question of how to safely mount it so it doesn't present a danger if there is sudden breaking or turning.

An alternative is a small USB powered GPS "dongle". No display, strictly USB output to the computer, but it is light weight and low power. These can sometimes be found very inexpensively, one source of compatible devices being Deluo Electronics. There are advantages and disadvantages to using S%T or Delorme when driving. I eventually went with a nuvi, but it is worth trying a notebook and street software to see the differences and choose what is best for you in different situations.

Thanks for the tip about the

Thanks for the tip about the dongles and Delorme/S&T. Time to look into it...

GPS III plus

I still have an old Garmin GPS III plus kicking around that I used to use with Delorme Street Atlas on a laptop. I had an aftermarket cable that allowed the GPS to be powered by a cigarette lighter and still connected to the computer. It was a cool setup in its day, but for my needs I get all the same functionality from my Nuvi, and I don't have to lug the laptop around.

I have MS S&T- I found a $29

I have MS S&T- I found a $29 GPS antenna at Fry's Electronics. It works? Is it better than my Garmin? NO, it is to bulky, but gotta love the big screen.

I had made a cable (there was someone who made an injection mold of a connector that would work in that 38, it was not a standardly available connector but a Garmin custom job). And I put a voltage regulator in it and could power the GPS from the lighter (needed because the GPS sure ate batteries). But when running the laptop in the computer I needed the lighter plug to power the laptop. The option of a simple light weight small usb powered gps receiver just became more reasonable than fooling with the Garmin 38. As a bonus I got WAAS with the Deluo Electronics gps, something that wasn't available when the 38 was made. And lots faster locking into the satellites also. It had its uses, and I may even fire it up again if I have a navigator riding with me. Voice commands to control the map were nice too. But overall I know I'll get a lot more use out of the nuvi than the notebook and usb receiver combo.

I believe there was a thread

..... that explained how to hook up to a lap top with a Garmin legend.

No. You cannot do it. You need some other type of device.

Plus with Google Earth, you would also need a full-time, mobile high-speed internet connection.

A Garmin 76S works

My Garmin 76S works with S&T. I used an old laptop with the unit plugged in and it worked fine. It was a bit cumbersome with all the wires needed to connect up(thats why I switched to a Nuvi) but the nice big laptop screen was great.

Garmin PC

You should try Garmin PC. I got a USB GPS receiver at Fry's for $29 less $20 rebate! It really looks nice on my little 10 inch Netbook screen!

Forget my question

Sorry, thought you said 765 but now I see your unit is a 76s

Nuvi 350, 760, 1695LM, 3790LMT, 2460LMT, 3597LMTHD, DriveLuxe 50LMTHD, DriveSmart 61, Garmin Drive 52, Garmin Backup Camera 40 and TomTom XXL540s.

You can use your Nuvi with Streets & Trips

It requires that you use a serial port emulator program like GPSgate to emulate a serial connection from the Nuvi's USB connection. This then allows the the conversion of the Garmin signal to NMEA protocol.

Works pretty well once setup and configured. The hardest part is to to get the Nuvi into GPS mode while connected via the USB port. The procedures for this, I'm sure, have been discussed here many times.

You can get a trial copy of GPSgate from http://franson.com/gpsgate/
