Line Breaks Anyone?

For those now working on or may be working on POI files in the future, I believe I may have discovered how to insert line breaks (dependably). It is the insertion of a simple “pipe”, “|” (uppercase backslash) character wherever a line break is desired for better display clarity. It works for my Nuvi 780, and I would be interested in finding out if it works for other models such as the 350/360 as well. An example would be in my file “Americas Best Inns”.

My question is : why create multiple lines in the address fields when there are other fields that can be used?

I want the first line to be usable as a comment and to show up on the first page not the more page.

Why not put that line in the comment section or the description section ?

Here is how those sections appear on the More page of my 255W:

Near CLSC

Line 1 EPE Description Section
Line 2 EPE Description Sectiion
Line 3 Epe Description Section

3600 Canyon Lake Dr
Rapid City SD Pennington 57702

Line 1 EPE Comment Section
Line 2 EPE Comment Section
Line 3 EPE Comment Section

Sorry about that, you stated that very clearly in your first post yet somehow I missread it.

Line Breaks on Garmin 255

Special "Thank You!!!"s to Whoaboy, BruceMcK, turboccc, and all others who have posted above.

I had been working most of today on learning how to create my own POI lists. I was using Notepad to create .csv files for my Garmin 255 (not 255W). I was frustrated because I could only get the name (no address or phone number) to show on the 1st screen and I could not get any line breaks on any screen.

Then, the heavens opened when I read BruceMck's comment that "< BR >" [without quotes or spaces} worked on his unit. This gave me an alternative I had not tried before. "< BR >" produced line breaks on my 255 (not 255W) in the 4th (Comments) field for information which appeared on the more screen. I could now separate my comments onto individual lines on the more screen; however, this solution did not work in the 3rd (Name) field for information appearing on the 1st screen. It just showed up there as "< BR >".

On trial and error, I simply hit the "Enter" key after typing a double quote and a name on the 1st line in the 3rd field. I then entered the street number and name on the 2nd line and hit "Enter" again. After entereing city, state, & zip on the 3rd line, I hit "Enter" again and put the phone number on the fourth line. I then closed the quotes on third (Name) field. (See form below.)

After entering a comma, I stared the final field by typing a double quote. I entered a couple of comments, separating them with "< BR >" [no quotes, no spaces], and then closed the quotes on the 4th (Comments) field. A form file for all of the above would be as follows (Of course, field 1, field 2 are lon,lat and would appear before the Name field.)

"Name (Enter) [Note: Do not type (Enter); Just hit "Enter" key!]
Street Address (Enter)
City, State Zip (Enter)
Phone", "Comment 1.< BR >Comment 2."
[Note: Do type "< BR >", but without "" or spaces!]

I used POI Loader to tranfer the file to the 255 and everything worked as I hoped. The name, street address, city/state/zip, and phone number all appeared on the 1st screen in the proper form and order and on separate lines. The same information appeared in the same format on the more screen, followed by a blank line, and subsequently followed by my comments, each on a separate line! Yea!!!

The monorail goes through the original hotel.
Sadly, it does not go through the new addition.

To sum up: Using Notepad to create a .cvs file for the Garmin 255, simply hitting the "Enter" key produces line breaks in the 3rd/Name field; however, you have to enter "< BR >" to produce line breaks in the 4th/Comment field. (I am not sure how many total line breaks various Garmin units will allow in each field.)

Again, from one who is quite new to this hobby, a special thanks to all of you who have opened so many of the doors for the rest of us! (With apologies as I have not yet learned all the necessities and niceties of posting on this forum but really wanted to say "Thank you!".)

Line breaks

Selfruler, this also works in nuvi 1340, but all text in the 3rd/Name field ends up in large bold text, which is not too pretty to look at. The text also repeats in the same fashion at the top in the 4th (Comments) field.

The text below in the 4th (Comments) field produces the desired line breaks.

-0.142524, 51.501069, Buckingham Palace, "Address:<br/>Her Majesty The Queen<br/>Buckingham Palace<br/>London SW1A 1AA"

Just keep it on a single line, include within double quotation marks (") and add <br/> where you want a new line to start.

Other HTML text formatting that works on the nuvi 1340 is small font (<small>) and bold font (<b>) and underline (<u>). smile

I do it

Finally an answer to a problem. I try to convert 4 column CSV files to 22 column CSV files using Excel. I then import the 22 column CSV file into Extra POI Editor and save it as a GPX file. I can then import the GPX file into Garmin POI Loader to create a very detailed POI file. My question-Are there any other "goofball" characters which must be treated the same or similar way using find/replace with Excel? The Excel help file is extremely lacking with this problem (I am using 2007 version).

I do this all the time, when I convert garmin csv files into m-csv files feed them in to epe and spit out gpx or ov2 files

POI Line Break

Anyone here try this with a mac? I tried the pipe and "alt-enter" but on the 7200 the pipe just shows up as a pipe without a line break, and the alt-enter just drops you a line in the csv file. I'll try the < br > today.

Tried < BR > with upper and lower case, It shows up as is, no line breaks. Anyone?????

Shlomie

I don't think anyone

I don't think anyone has tested with a Street Pilot. The testing and codes were developed using the Nuvi line.

with my old windows computer, the "alt+013" (or "alt+015", can't remember...) worked like a charm. I'm trying to find the equivalent in mac.

Text File

Tried saving these poi's in Unicode (UTF-16), Unicode (UTF-8), Western (Mac OS Roman), and Western (ASCII). All with the same results, the | shows up as a | with no line break, and < br > shows up as < br > with no line break.

Does anyone have any idea that I might try???

At this point I'll try almost anything.......

Shlomie

I don't know MAC but

Just checking, I believe you know that the < br > is without spaces. The 7200 may want CRLF, so the ALT+"013" is a CR followed by a ALT+"010" which is a LF. I just don't know how you enter this in a text file on a MAC.
