Off Road doesn't do the job for railroad travel

OK - everybody else knows how to go off-road with a nuvi 780 but not me! I was riding on a railroad speeder excursion in West Virginia (see www.narcoa.org to learn what a RR speeder is and what a cool hobby it is!!!). We were running down the tracks but Garmin insisted on snapping back to the nearest road at every available opportunity. I finally found 'pedestrian' mode but that didn't do it. I found 'off road' mode but THAT didn't do it. I enabled every avoidence I could choose but that diden't help. FINALLY, I set 'pedestrian' mode AND 'off road' mode and that was the combo that allowed me to track my progress down the rails.

Of course I switched back to 'automobile' and 'fastest time' when I hit the road for home. Unfortunately, I forgot to disable avoidences so British Emily was yelling at me all the way home to get off the expressway and take the nearest back road!!! But that's another story. wink

Bob Bob Bob <-RedFormanvoice> why were you not just using the CSX76???????????????

Your mapping of the trip would have been a breeze!

OFF ROAD

I travel about 6,000 to 10,000 miles on Amtrak yearly.
I have been using both a Ique3600 and a Nuvi750 and I use OFF ROAD while traveling on the train. I've never had a problem with tracking my trips. They all follow the tracks without any trying to snap back to a roadway.
Maybe when this happens, you might do a RESET and see if that fixes your problem.

Ridding a train with a Nuvi 260

I tried tracking a train trip on my Nuvi 260 and like you Bob, it kept snapping back to the nearest road.

I set the device in "pedestrian" mode but that did not help. Unfortunately, the 260 does not have an "Off Road" option.

Was there anything else I could have done?

Simon

Same Here

I have been taking the Autotrain from Lorton Va to Sanford Fl. for many years. I used my 255 last year and it stayed on the tracks and gave me the exact arrival time. All the window seats have an ac outlet to plug into. Pluged it in and it ran for 17 hours without missing a beat.

260 and Off Road setting

According to the Nuvi 260 (Nuvi 200 and 200W Series) Manual Page 21 (Changing the Navigation Settings) you do have an OFF ROAD setting.
I think you are looking in the wrong place . You are looking in the MODE Settings, Page 20.

You are right, it is there, where I would not have looked for it ( and who reads manuals?).

On my french unit, the option is poetically labelled "vol d'oiseau", bird's flight.

Can't wait to try it on my next train or plane trip.

Thanks

Road Lock

There needs to be a better way to get rid of road lock on the Nuvis. Off Road would be of no help when navigating a route. I can't see how arrival time could be correct with off road. It is straight line navigation.

If you are not locked to a road (off road) what would you be routing on????? What would guide the route to be taken?

Well if you are using a

Well if you are using a train then you are still on the road (road bed). As for in a boat then you should be using a marine unit.

I don't like the idea of being on an access road and the unit has me on the interstate. This happens quite frequently.

In addition, on a recent trip the unit had problems aquiring satellites because of the terrain and most satellites being near the horizon. I was on the interstate and the unit kept recalulating because it thought I was on nearby roads. I had to turn it off because it was going crazy.

Newbie question

I am considering buying a Garmin. Which unit(s) have the capability of saving the traveled track to a map on my PC?

All as far as I know. You just need to extract the log data.

Have you tried an external antenna yet? One could be a great help to you in your situation in having difficulties with sat locks and terrain.

I have a Nuvi 265WT, there is no way to connect an external antenna. That was an unusual situation and an antenna wouldn't help with road lock. My first gps was a Garmin Emap. It had a way to turn road lock off even though it used straight line navigation.

Anyone has an idea how to do this with a Nuvi 260? Like you said, I'm pretty sure it's in there, but I could not figure out where it's saved.

Simon

Try this.

Following RR Tracks

Thanks for all your suggestions. When I remember to change to off-road and pedestrian, I can follow the tracks successfully with my nuvi 780!!

I agree - there aren't any railroad related icons that I can find. I'd love to have a railroad motorcar (check www.narcoa.org to see what I mean)!!!
