Nuvi Usage (while walking)

How many use there Nuvi for walking around with to find a location or your current location? If you use it in this manner, how do you carry it or hold it while doing that? Do you attach something to it to hold it? Do you put it in something to protect it?

I would like to use it in that way, but I am afraid I would drop it and break it. Interested in others experiences.

thanks,

RE: Nuvi Usage

I do use my nuvi 680 to walk to locations sometimes (it really helps me decide if a place is "within walking distance" or not) and it does just fine. I carry mine in the case that was provided ... of course I also usually have a purse or handbag that I can put it in so I don't need to carry it in my hands too much.

not really a device for the purpose.

pedestrian mode, even though Nuvi's® have this mode, they really are not a suitable device for this purpose. if you need to use a GPS on foot you might want to get a hand held Garmin or Magellan from Ebay.

I have a etrex legend

I was just curious if people used them when walking and how they protect them.

I appreciate the replies.

Nuvi Walking Case

If you are going to use your nuvi for walking you may want to consider purchasing a case. I recently noticed that Monoprice has started carrying gps accessories. I haven't purchased a case yet, but hard to go wrong for $5!! http://tinyurl.com/l5bu8v

(Note - I'm not affiliated with Monoprice. Just a happy customer!!)

Wow

It looks nice and it's very affordable (only $7.65 with tax and shipping). However, the surface of the 2 slots for SD cards looks kinda rough. I wonder if that'll scratch the display.

Btw, it looks like you've purchased something from monoprice.com. I've never heard of monoprice. Are they reliable vendor?

Case

I have not used my 254 for walking but I have a speck case on it. I paid 20.00 at Target but it was worth every dollar spent. You putting a 5.00 case on a 200 dollar product may not be the best idea.

.

chewbacca - yes, I've purchased lots of electronic cables from Monoprice over the years and have yet to be disappointed. Don't let their cheap prices fool you. And they are very reliable. They once sent me the wrong cable so I called them and they immediately shipped me the correct cable and told me to just keep the other one!

Out of curiosity I just checked their rating on resellerratings.com. A lifetime rating of 9.73 out of 10. And thats with 1,571 ratings. So I'd say they are pretty reliable!!

pennywise19791998 - let me guess, you also buy Monster cables right? LOL

Monoprice.com

They are just a few miles away from me (when I'm in Ontario, CA) so I just do a will-call. No shipping charges for me. cool

I'm going to Ontario in a few weeks. Where is this place located and do they have a show room for customer retail sales?

I do.

When I'm not around my home turf I carry it in my pocket in the case it came with, so that I can find my vehicle and other places around where I am smile

I noticed this case on the garmin site, similar to the one given above, but opens on the side instead of the top - https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=13541#

Thanks GadgetGuy2008. Their GPS cases look nice. I'll probably get one of those.

DorkusNimrod, it looks like gusb (NY) thinks you're talking about Ontario Canada instead of Ontario California smile

thanks everyone

Appreciate the responses. looks like the speck case would give good protection.

Consider the Garmin Topo product...

I use a 250w, and use Topo 2008 on it. Once uploaded through the Mapsource software, it will display after you go to settings, maps, and uncheck the City Navigator map set.

It makes for a decent substitute hiking GPS, as I see that you are planning a trip to the Rockies.

The only real downside that I have is that the 250w doesnt do tracking like my 60CSx, so I cannot pre-plan a hike with it using tracks.

I recently used the 250w during a trip to the Grand Canyon along side the 60CSx while hiking, and I kept it in an old Palm Pilot case. It was a little awkward getting it out of my pocket and the case when I wanted to see it, but my 60CSx has a case with a belt strap loop and still have to pull it out to see it. The 60CSx could be seen better in bright daylight as it doesnt require backlighting to be seen.

The Nuvi is still a powerful tool, no matter where you use it.

Have fun in Colorado!!!

Monoprice

I learned about Monoprice from the Black Friday listing (bfads.net) last Thanksgiving. I ordered a bunch of cables and adapters and a wall mount for my LCD TV (about $15 rather then $50 or more). I was skeptical, but the cables and adapters were of very high quality and the TV mount was also of the highest quality... no rough edges, very sturdy.

I became a believer but didn't know that they carried GPS accessories. I may order a case and an extra power cord. Maybe a screen protector too!

Prices just can't be beat. (No I don't work there.)

Walking in European Cities

Yes - Nuvi 250W fits just fine in an inside pocket of a jacket, no case required. I used it quite often in cities in Europe though there are two points to consider.

Battery life - so only use it when needed.

City buildings - make satellite contact difficult --- BUT --- if you really can not get a satellite fix at walking speed you can use it like an ordinary paper map!
