Do the POI's show up on the gps map?

Sorry if this has been asked before...
If I download POI's do they just sit in a file until I select a place I want to go? Or do icons appear on my map, so if I happen to be near a place of interest, I might stop there on whim.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 255wt.

The icons will show up on the map but you need to be zoomed WAY in (I believe 300 ft or under) to see them.

custom poi
Custom POIs which you obtain here need an icon to show up. Be sure you get it and put it in the same folder as the POIs. It will show up when you are near one. Custom POI icons show up fine without zooming in. The icons for the standard POIs that came with your GPS don't show up in 3d mode unless you zoom in.

Icons for Custom POIs do NOT show on the moving map regardless of the icon used unless:
1. You are zoomed in to 300 ft or below
2. The POI is set with a proximity alert and you have entered the proximity alert zone
3. You've searched for the POI and are viewing it on the pan map screen
Favorites OTOH show on the moving map at pretty much all zoom levels.

On my 350 in simulate mode going to a walmart i pass a advanced auto store on the way and it calls it out and shows the icon too,i have mine set to 2000 ft..

You can add an Icon as well
You can add an Icon as well (it'll load when you use the POILoader), but I've found you've gotta be really zoomed-in to see them.
Do POI Show in the screen while you are driving, if so how?
I have a 255W, and POIs only show in the static map, but not when driving. Anyway to fix this?

See DorkusNimrod's reply right above yours. This would fall under exception #2 - proximity alert is enabled and you're within alert zone. Therefore you see the icon.
