Garmin relaxing their map license policy.

Hay all,

I just received my new Garmin Edge 605 for my bicycle. It works great and I learned that Garmin will transfer my CNNA NT 2009 map-set for use on this unit, since I no longer would be using it due to my nuMaps subscription. Garmin said that they have relaxed their license policy and will provide an unlock code for me.

Edit: Sorry I took so long to update; Garmin made good on their offer. They said that they would do it as a one time courtesy. It was a very pleasant experience with them through the process.

Sounds great

Sounds great

I hope so

I hope so.

wow

Have they made any official announcement about this policy? I'd consider buying the maps subscription if I could transfer it to replacement units in the future.

.

I don't think jrozsnaki was talking about Garmin transferring the nuMaps subscription to the Edge 605 but rather Garmin generating a new unlock code for the older 2009 maps that used to be on his nuvi so he could use those on the Edge 605 he purchased.

i own 8 units from garmin

i called them this morning, asked if the 2009 would be of any use on my new 60csx since i have the 765t, was told no that it would not be a wise move, soo, he suggested that i get topo maps, when i told him that i was thinking of getting topos, but not from them (too high) he through out a offer, let me order a micro sd card, and gave me a credit back of 50 bucks so the topo i ordered only cost 49.00 not a bad deal i thought!

There's no evidence that they've relaxed their map license policy.
Please...I'll believe it when I see it.
Any official links?

There are some customer service representatives that go beyond what they are required(or supposed to do) while others follow the book line by line and never deviate from company policy under any circumstances.
This may just have been the case. You seem to have gotten a nice one.

Garmin working with you THATS NEW

how nice is that offer?

I'm not sure how nice that offer is, if the customer service rep is telling you something about a future transfer that isn't true. If one were to buy a lifetime subscription based on a rep saying that the policy was loosened and that it could be transferred in the future, but that wasn't actually the policy and when you later called and tried to transfer but got a normal customer rep, you might no feel that the rep has done you a favor by giving wrong but generous sounding information.

If jrozsnaki actually got an unlock code, that's great. But more harm than good is done if expectations of a Garmin policy that doesn't really exist are spread through the community.

Just look at the Mapsource thread.
There are many people who's requested Mapsource from Garmin and had to pay shipping for the disk. There are others who got the disk and didn't have to pay a dime for shipping(ex: me). And there are others who had to pay for both the disk and shipping!.
I think it would be wrong for me to make an assumption saying "Garmin relaxing Mapsource policy to pay for disk and cover shipping" thread just because I got it for free (or got a good deal).

Again, it all depends who you're talking to on the other line, how nice they are to you and you are to them, and many other little insignificant variables such as whether the person woke up on the wrong side of bed that morning or not...

What I'm basically saying is that no one should "jump the gun" and automatically assume their policy has been officially updated. I would hate to buy another unit only to find out that's not true. If it does indeed turn out to be true, then that's great and my entire rant can be ignored.

No Announcement

It was a one time courtesy that they did for me.

Correct - It was the CNNA NT mapset, as it would just be loaded and not used, as I have the nuMaps subscription.

Caution: Maps on micro SD card

Werskine,

I have the TOPO US 2008 map-set too. Please be advised that you will NOT be able to view the maps with Mapsource, as they cannot be downloaded from the SD card to the PC - I recommend the Dvd, as you will be able to use the Mapsource features with the TOPO 2008 maps(most current).

Frovingslosh,

I spoke to 2 different agents - the first one told me that they would be able to accommodate me because they "relaxed their license policy a bit." I told this to the second agent when I actually had a unit, and registered it (they needed the unit SN). He hooked me up with no problem, sent they email to me while I was still on the phone with him. The new unlock code worked like a charm. I went on my first ride with it today after work (30 mi) the CNNA NT 2009 maps were right on. BTW: I spoke to the agents for their fitness products.

Garmin has my future purchase

Reasonable customer service policies like this are a nice change from what I see in the PC industry. Garmin will have my business when I'm ready to upgrade.
