Phoenix Cameras...More Than Red Lights and Speeding!

I was listening to the news on the way in to work this morning and they said that there will be more cameras on the Phoenix streets and that not only will they snap a pic of you speeding on green or running redlights now, they will also start ticketing for no seatbelts, cracked windshields and expired tags. Hhmmmm, what's next, no infant seats, can of beer in your hand, talking on a cell phone, putting on makeup, etc., etc. They gotta find some way to make up for the budget shortfall and it looks like they're going to squeeze all they can with these street/portable cams.

Well those are all things that are against the law/code. Now when they start ticketing you for paying attention to your driving then I might get upset. smile

budget shortfall

If it's just a question of budget shortfall, why not examine the picture for a companion and then check that person against the driver's license picture of the wife/husband of the driver. In case of a mismatch, a letter in a plain brown envelope should then take care of any State budget shortfalls. At least that gives some advantage to the few singles left out there. Of course they are the only ones financially able to make the suggested contribution that will be unreasonably high.

Surprised

They are not including infants in the front seat and unwashed vehicles with the "wash Me" scribbled in the dust.

Or people driving uninsured

Or people driving uninsured cars, or cars currently being used to commit other crimes!

The Alternative

When enough people make a political issue of it - vote against those who support this kind of taxation, & it is taxation, then balance will be returned.

Until them, rely on your Redlight & Speed Camera info & obey the law.

Come On! Don't You See The Point?

That is obvious. Just making the point that the government is trying to squeeze every cent out of these speed cameras.

I'm waiting for someone who gets flashed to have an accident due to the "temporary blindness" from the camera flash. Remember that. It's just a matter of time before someone does and finds a lawyer who will try it. Now that will be interesting.

Sounds more like BIG BROTHER at work.

You bet they are

Not only that, a friend told me the other day he got ticketed for 'attempted' jay walking. I put 'attempted' there because he didn't actually jay walk.

What happened was he took 1 step forward, on the crosswalk, and realized that the light hasn't turned to "WALK", stepped right back on the curb. A few seconds later, the light turned to allow pedestrian to cross. A cop saw the whole thing and wrote him a jay walking citation. It's a stinkin' $300 ticket if I remember correctly.

Watch out!

It's tough out there

Maybe we need Jay Walking cameras? Thankfully, your friend avoided the lesser included charge of "conspiracy to commit jay-walking".

Don't move to Phoenix?

Good afternoon, folks,

Phoenix isn't the start, and it sure won't be the end. I believe that as long as you make a conscious effort to obey the law (rules) you've got little to worry about, cams or not.

Its not the start of this, indeed. Red light cameras are a rare case - they didnt origionate in california, but Florida. It Will indeed get worse before it gets better.

who's really watching

The number of mobile units has increased dramatically in the Tucson area in the last couple weeks.

FYI, I was driving by one the other day, doing exactly the posted speed but for some stupid reason I elected to give the radar vehicle the "international first birthday salute" and since there turned out to be a person inside the radar vehicle, he decided to take my picture....

funny, stupid, not funny or mostly just sad?

LM

No Sympathy

I have no sympathy for someone that violates the law and gets caught by law enforcement personnel, but that is where law enforcement should be handled in the hands of law enforcement personnel and not a private company that is in the business for a profit.

Now I find that extremely funny and real stupid on your part. Sad... not at all, very disrespectful you bet!

Never again!

Now, if they can just determine if a van with the windows painted has 30 illegals inside, we can do away with the border patrol.

The speed now where they ticket you is 11 miles over the speed limit. I was caught six days before they changed it from 10, which is what I was doing. Cost me $180 for the extra mile. But, I used to have a lead foot so these gadgets have made me slow down.

Former Alaskan Sourdough.

Are the photos a matter of public record?

Are photos available to the general public? Could a concerned citizen review them for public vehicles? Are they ticketed equally?

sounds doubtful

Sounds like a joke to me!

There's no way the cameras have enough resolution to detect cracks on windshields as they drive at speed. Sounds mighty ambitious for whatever camera at work.

Can't Find Page

Can you provide a link to that page? The map showing locations of stationary cameras is simple to find but I'm not having any luck locating a page posted daily with assignments for mobile vans.

wink

Radar Detector??

Do the Speed cameras make a radar detector go off?

Cameras and radar

tomic wrote:

I'd guess radar is used so it should be detectable.

I can think of three possible alternate technologies: Laser (require aiming); buried wires; transponders (or On-star).

I don't claim these are used; just possible.

dkstl wrote:

I second that!

Growth pattern crippled Phoenix

I googled Phoenix to see why they need the money so badly, and this is what I found.

Everybody seemed to benefit as metropolitan Phoenix swelled from 1 million people in 1955 to 6.5 million today.

One reason the current housing collapse has been so brutal in Phoenix is how suddenly that pattern broke down. In only a couple of years,he breakdown trapped people in unfinished communities much like a fast-moving landslide buries people in their tracks.

Digging into the rubble of Phoenix's latest real-estate collapse, the damage is clearest in edge developments, areas where home values have fallen the most and foreclosures are highest. Homeowners on half-empty blocks feel stranded and frustrated. Down unfinished roads, the empty corners, vacant strip malls and stalled school projects suggest the ghost of a community that buyers counted on.

I visit my parents in PHX on ocassion, and yeah, it's amazing how many speed and red light cameras I've seen there.

Funny thought, though. For GPS traffic to really work well, you would almost need each car reporting it's position and speed real-time, then there's another way to get you! So would it lead to a choice of traffic reporting, or big brother?

I guess they could also put sensors along all the roads that track traffic anonamously? (Sp?)

Right! I also forgot the tracking bug inserted behind my ear by aliens.

Not behind the ear!
