Here in gods own

Here in gods own (New Zealand) we have nothing in the glove box to point the naughty boys to our house. There is no need to carry insurance papers and registration, while they are lables on the windscreen the only thing they have on is the licence plate number and expiry date, no address anywhere. So by taking the GPS with you or locking it is a must.

Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...

It doesn't really make sense

It doesn't really make sense to have to carry "licence and insurance" in the car or in person any more. The cops can figure out if it's insured before they get out of their vehicle to talk to you, and it doesn't take much longer to check if a driver has a valid licence.

I think that...

locks like this are to keep "honest" people honest. Most deterances such as this, to a real thief are like taking candy from a baby. If a skilled thief wants to know where you live etc. they are not going to steal youg GPS and spend hours trying to break the code on a $120.00 GPS, they will simply follow you home, wait until you leave again, then break in...steal the easy stuff, then come back for the serious stuff. So, I don't worry about my "Home" on my GPS, everything I have is insured...I worry about things that matter...the thieves in Washington and higher taxes, not my GPS!

In the good old days

Garmin didn't have unlock codes, and you could install any map you bought on any of your devices.

I miss those days.

Security

First line of defense is hide your GPS and Lock your car door. That should take care of it all.

Thanks for the info and tips

Thanks for the info and tips posted here about the unlock code (although mythbusters says busted smile ) and good tip on what to use as your home location.

Don't leave what you don't want to lose. Period.

I've seem plenty of reports here about GPSs stolen from a locked car, even when cleverly "hidden" in the console or under the seat. While I acknowledge it could happen, I have not yet seen one report of one stolen after it was taken out of the car.

Bingo!

I always take mine out of the car, even if I'm just going into a store. I use the lock feature and also installed a splash screen with my contact information. So if my GPS ends up in someone else's hands, they didn't get it from my car where they could also find my registration & insurance information with my address printed on it. They got it because I did something really stupid, like leave it in the hotel room when I checked out, left it on the restaurant table, set it down on the counter at the store while I was paying, etc. redface

So if someone else has my GPS, that's all they got and they will be left looking at the "Enter PIN" screen.
