How does Nuvi 255w locate downloaded POIs when using "Where To"

I'm a newbie and trying to learn how to download and use POIs. I've downloaded POI files (diners, drive ins, and dives)and see them in the Extras folder. When I try to find one of those restaurants using Where To? will they appear if I use the regular Points of Interest folder and then select Food? I've tried to locate a few. I found one that was downloaded, but it had a different spelling of the name.

If a downloaded POI already exists in the standard POIs, will it be overridden by the exsting file?

Are downloaded POIs integrated with the standard POIs and included when a search is made or is there some additional step to search for these POIs.

Thanks. Trying to get an understanding of how these function before I spend time downloading a bunch and I couldn't find the answers in FAQs.

Two different types of POI's

Thats not how it works, the POI you load and the data base that came with your gps are used differently.
If you read the links below you will get a head start on what you need to know about POI's on your GPSr.

After reading these you will have a better understanding of how to use the POI's.

Still have questions

Thanks for the info. I read all the FAQs and the data supplied by charlesd45. I have no problem downloading the POIs and locating them in the custom POIs folder on my nuvi255w.

I'm confused by how they are accessed. I downloaded DinersDriveinsDives_Eb. It has a list of restaurants and, for example, one of those is Dor- Stop Restaurant in Pittsburgh. I find it if I enter the following sequence: Where to, Points of Interest, near, A Different City, Pittsburgh, Food, etc.

I don't know if it is from the file I downloaded or if it already was on my Garmin, so I'm not sure if that is the way I should be finding these POIs or some other way.

I was thinking that when i found the POI it would somehow be identified as a diners, driveins and dives restaurant.

That Would be a built-in

You can ONLY access your custom POIs via the Extras. The built-in POIs are the only ones searchable via the method you used.

This works - just tried it

This works for the custom POI's:
Where to, Points of Interest, near, A Different City, (type in city), Extras, (then the POI)
You will get results PROVIDED there is a city name within the file.

.

But it will not work if the user is search the built in POIs.

(ie Where to? > near > A Different City > (type the city) > Food)

The Custom POIs are NOT mixed in with the built in POIs. They are separate and are typically found under Extras.

Correct

Skipping the built in POI and going to the "Extras" folder and then a folder in there.

The extras icon is where the custom (you installed or created) POIs are located.

Correct extras is for custom

Correct extras is for custom pois but you can't get there the way you outlined. That gets you searching for pre-installed pois.Using the other method gets you to extras and will only show the custom pois for that area based on the closest 50.

Once you get to the Custom

Once you get to the Custom POI screen that lists the closest 50, select spell to find the one you are looking for.
