I have a colleague who has a son serving in the military, stationed in Bangkok.
He asked me if it were possible to buy a GPS unit that his son could use to get around Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand. I really didn't have an answer for him.
Does anyone know the answer to his question and is there any particular brand that would have good/better maps of Bangkok?
Many thanks,
The gpsr will work anywhere...
The only problem would be if maps are available for the area of the world for the unit....

Thailand is one of 6 countries bundled in CN SE Asia map. Here's the coverage map:

I don't know how accurate it is because I've never used it.
EDIT:
Oops... never mind, I just checked your link after posting a reply. You've posted SE Asia map link. My bad.

Can you imagine how large the POI file would be for Bangkok "nightclubs"!

A store I can recommend in downtown Bangkok
The store Gadgetrend has two locations in Bangkok and can supply Garmin GPS units as well as the required map for navigating in Thailand. This link (http://www.gadgetrend.com/gps_mapthailandinst.php takes you to the page which provides all details about the Thailand street map.
I just bought a Garmin Oregon 300 for about 27,000 baht, with the Thailand map installed, from the Ratchaprasong Store (in the middle of the shopping district, with direct access from the Chidlom "skytrain" station. Details at http://www.gadgetrend.com/contactus.php)
Hope this works out for your friend's son.
