Interesting that they are suppling it on an SD card

Thanks for posting, they actually delivered it sooner than they had advertized. And they switched to providing it by SD card.

Now who will be the first to try it out and see how good the information is?

Firmware Update

I updated firmware on my unit last night. I already have 2008/2009 map and at this moment I'm not ready to shell $79.99 for a few new streets. I'll wait until the price is discounted or maybe until next upgrade is out.

Thank you dude

you are the best

Which Map

There are 2 map updates for 2009. Is the Spring update the newest one?

Yes

Yes

price

They really need to drop the prices on these map updates. $79 for a map update, or I could spend another $20 for a new unit... I know they drop the price to $59 around when the new map will be released but spending $99 for a new unit seems more reasonable.

Fully Agree!

$49.99

I just checked and the Spring update is $49.99 for my Maestro 4250.

Lifetime Maps

I think lifetime maps is the only way to go if you plan to keep your GPS for at least 3 years.

Magellan doesn't offer lifetime maps, at least not yet.

Updates on Sale - Yeah!

Thanks for posting. I have been waiting for this update to go on sale. A little amazed that it happened within just six months of release, I thought it would be just after Christmas.

POI's

Interesting information for all users that own GPS units with less than 6 million POI's.

Question:

How many POI (points of interest) will my GPS have access to now?

Answer:

All GPS receivers compatible with this 2009 spring map update will have access to approximately 6 million POI.

POIs can be updated for free...

You only get AAA information from AAA.....

BacklashZ06 wrote:

If you are an AAA member.

That gives you ONLY the AAA database......NOT the main POI file.

Fall sale on spring update

Got email from magellan today on fall sale on maps- unforuntately not a new fall version but the 2008/2009 and spring updates!

Late email

I also received an email for the sale. I thought it was getting cheaper but it was the same price it was last month. I guess they were a little late with the emails!

Installed the update on a 4250 and...

And you can not load the maps onto the unit's built in memory, they stay on the SD card to run.

The problem is with POI files I have created. if I copy them onto the map card, they are seen by the unit but will not load properly.

Anyone have a solution?

Loss of capability due to map update

I have posted the following as a Magellan support submission because I feel that I have lost part of my feature capabilities on my Maestro 5310.

"Just received Spring 2009 Map update. Assumed when purchased that info on SD card would be transferred to unit. However, instructions require removing existing SD card and inserting map update permanently.

This means I can longer use my library of personal POIs. Your technical support representative indicated that if I wanted my POIs then I should remove map SD card. This is unacceptable as I have paid $50 to latest maps and cannot use them to reach my personal POIs.

I have now lost a key capability which was a primary reason I bought the Maestro 5310 in the first place!!!!

You need to provide a program (free and downloadable) which will allow me to update the system TFAT 'drive' from the SD card thereby freeing the SD slot again."

Does such a program already exist?

POI's

Why don't you install your POI's on the HDD? I understand your anger. As an update the Spring 2009 Map should have never being distributed as a SD Map, but to make things more acceptable for you maybe this is a way to go.

That is the only solution, but....

Yep, that is the only solution. However, it still does not address that the 4250's start up slower thanks to not having the maps on the unit itself. Whoever actually designed this update clearly does not use the units.

Just another example why there is no brand loyality with reguard to GPS units. Support is marginal at best.

Malgellan customer support is less than useless....

I e-mail Magellan customer support and they responded that it will only run on the SD card, no comment on why you can not save a POI file to the card that has a map. Overall they were useless and it's clear they do not care.

Well, when I buy a new unit it will not be Magellan. They had built a fairly good interface and system with the 4250 and they could not even maintain it.

It looks like their sale price has expired. They are back to $79.99 at their official web site.

AutoNavDirect.com has them for $53.99. Here is the link: http://www.autonavdirect.com/product-14.html?gclid=CMjUqq_u0...

I just ordered my FREE map

I just ordered my FREE map upgrade as they have the 30 day map upgrade guarantee. Overall this unit performs pretty well. I do however would like to see how the new map (on an SD card) will perform with the unit.

PROBLEM.. NEED HELP

I have a major problem.. somehow someway.. My brother is in town and he has a brand new Maggellan Roadmate 1200. He lost the maps And refuses to pay for another because magelan wouldnt replace it. So i got a copy of the maps from someone else. (SPRING 2009)
Its includes a Media.cfg a few POI, MX.imi and US48.imi and im still lost. I have a 4gig sd card.. threw those items in the 4 gig and the stoopid machien still says something about the
***SD card is removed
Program will restart.
PLease insert SD card with MAP.!!***

No wonder

that you can't copy Spring Map Update that came on a SD card and expect it to work. Even if there is way to make it work we don't discuss it here.

try....

a hard reset with the SD card installed and see if it works.

Shyt

I did something.. and now when i start the macine it has a blue rectangle box.. with a white background screen nothing written on it! What happened?

RE: PROBLEM.. NEED HELP

I struggled with this same problem yesterday. Wasted hours getting the same error message. Throughout the process I thought I had the latest firmware installed on my 1412: version 1.34.

As a last resort, I visited Magellan and found out they had their newest firmware update as 3.12. Installed it, and 'voyla', the unit can now recognize all maps.

By the way, if your unit was working with the maps on the SD card previously, don't bother updating the Media.cfg file since it'll point for maps on the HDD (internal memory) and won't work. Keep the original media.cfg.

These were some of the lines of the media.cfg file I've got with the updated maps, which were wrong for my case:
# Basemap
\SDMMC Card\MAP

# Detailmap Map Data
\SDMMC Card\MAP

# POI Map Data
\SDMMC Card\MAP

First, the SD card is called SDMMC, not 'SDMMC Card'. Second error, these entries would require all maps and POI to be stored under a subdirectory MAPS.

I use:
# Basemap
\SDMMC

# Detailmap Map Data
\SDMMC

# POI Map Data
\SDMMC

In this case, the maps shall be on the root directory of the SD card

Good luck,
Claudio

Map update on SD card

I just bought a Magellan 3225 that is eligible for a free map update for a $10 shipping fee. I am debating whether or not to do the update. For those who have, is there a decrease in performance due to the maps being on the SD card? Where do you place custom POIs? Is there room on the SD card or do they now go to internal memory? Why can't you just copy the map files from the SD card over to internal memory and continue to use the SD card for custom POIs, keeping the previous Media.cfg file? Mine currently lists:

# Basemap
\HDD\MAP

# Detailmap Map Data
\HDD\MAP

# POI Map Data
\HDD\MAP

# User Data
\HDD\USR

# Sound files data
\HDD\APP

# SD Card simulation directory
\SDMMC Card

# Speech files data
\HDD\APP

The map update appears to change the file as quoted below:

Magellan customer support has been useless. I asked about where to place custom POIs if the SD card is used for the map files. He told me the SD card cannot be used for POI files. It is only for backing up internal memory. I have custom POIs on my SD card, so I know he is wrong.

I also asked how large the new map file is on the SD card. I was wondering if there would still be room for my custom POI files. He responded, "It's really big."

Working well

2009 Spring Map is about 1.58 GB and comes on a 2 GB SD Card. There is more than enough empty space to storage all of your POI's. I personally haven't noticed any decrease in performance of my GPS (Maestro 3200) since switching to the newest map (SD Card).

Re: Map update on SD card

I have a 1412 that has always used maps on the SD card, so I don't have a way to compare processing speed wit those that have it on internal memory. I can say that it has always worked fine with the maps stored on the SD.

The memory size on the motherboard of the 1412 is rather small: 64Mb or something like that (I don't have it with me as I write this). I have saved personal POIs on both the motherboard memory and SD cards with success. Just need to update the media.cfg file accordingly.

I made a copy of the original maps on the original SD card on my PC. Erased all files on the SD card, and loaded the new maps from the Spring 2009 edition. (why? I didn't have any other 2GB SD card at home at that time! smile

I've already noticed that three addresses (2 in the US, 1 in Canada) I could not find on the old map, are now available. Those addresses were in new house developments which probably didn't cut in time the old maps were released. I also got Mexico now, which was not available on the original maps.

Also, the POI file is updated and just last night I was able to find a restaurant I had to go to by just typing its name in the search box. This restaurant had changed names two years ago and the old POI was outdated. Hopefully this will be the case for other businesses too, where I could not find them by name and had to enter full address instead.

My guess is that the Magellan Tech Support guys prefer to tell you to not mess with the configuration (like changing parameters on the media.cfg file) to avoid newbies breaking their units and requiring repair, which costs them labor and shipping.

Good luck,
Claudio

Version

Is the Spring 2009 update Basemap Navstreet version 35, and the Detailed map Navstreets version 37?

I've noticed a slow down also using the SD card, its not painful, but noticeable when booting the unit, or switch the the map view.

Oops spoke too soon, the delay was only the first time I booted my GPS after inserting the SD card. It now seems to be back to normal speed.

Correct

Correct, these are the versions that end up in place when installing the Spring Maps.

I also like the latest firmware version for the 1412 that is mandatory to use the new maps. It now offers type-ahead on the street names and a few other improvements.
