POI Files on Micro SD HC

Now that I have a Garmin Nuvi 500 and have a 4 gHz micro SDHC card on order, I am wondering if there is any way to estimate the number of POI files that I can add. I realize that it is going to be just an approximation, of course, but I have a lot of POIs on my Garmin StreetPilot 2730 and I am hoping to add as many, or more, on the Nuvi 500 as I have on the 2730.

You think you mean 4GB micro

You think you mean 4GB micro SDHC card....

I have an 8gb card.

Up till now however, I have been loading them into main memory as I didn't realize I could use the external card.

I currently have 11871 POI's loaded (now on the storage card).

The resulting poi.gpi file is 1565k

The source files were a total of 1.2mb and includes a mix of POI, mp3 and bmp files used only for POI's.

Note that after I installed them I was asked...

New Extras data found on card.
Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?

When I said no (don't plan on removing the card).

They showed up properly in the Extras menu though.

Each time I restarted the device it asked the same question. By saying Yes, and then on the next screen, checking the Don't Ask Me Again prompt and then hitting skip, it stops asking.

Typically, I have found that I can get approximately (give or take) 10,000 Custom POI locations per megabyte of space.

POI Files on Micro SD HC

Thank you for the reply. So that means roughly 40,000,000 POI files. Yes, that ought to be plenty!

I don't recall at the moment how many I have on my 2730 and, since I am out of town with the Nuvi 500, I don't have it with me, but I think I have a large number of POIs on the 2730.

POI Files and SD Cards

I tend to load my POIs directly on to the GPS and use the SD card for MP3 files - music and podcasts. It takes a bit more time to organize and upload but I figure the locations would be pretty well up-to-date, unlike the pre-loaded sites on the unit.

40,000,000 locations would be too confusing... and I don't think I drive THAT much!

for me

I have about 30,000 POI's and that is 7 MB of space.
I have no use yet for the SD card on my 255w because there is still 600MB of available space on it. (I dumped a bunch of the foreign voices) I'll never use them.

Garmin nuvi 2455LMT (wife uses nuvi 255w) (sold C330)

.

With about 13,000 POI's I got a memory warning before I moved them to the SD card.

Capacity of my Nuvi 780 appears to be about 1.85gb.

It has 384mb free so there is not a lot of space on it for adding a lot of POI's.

I currently have 26548 POI's using up about 4mb of space on the 8GB SD card.

For those who stored POI in external memory (SD Card)

I've just cleaned up my POIs from Nuvi internal memory and reloaded them into my 4GB SD card. The following shows up everytime I switch on my GPS:

New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed? Yes/No

I keep pressing No button. That's why it keeps asking me the same question while starting up. What if I press Yes? Will it be copied back to my Nuvi internal memory? If I want to keep POI in external memory, how can I make the message disappear other than pressing Yes?

If you say "Yes", it will bring up another screen with a checkbox to quit asking; you are then given the opportunity to skip transferring that particular gpi file. You will no longer be bothered.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Done

Thanks for your quick reply.

On my 760 I do not get the second question. If I say yes it loads it into the Garmin.

I got the same screen. Just check the box and then press no where it asks you to continue. This will stop the load program, but still register the no option in the garmin.
