I know that there isn't any GPS in a touch but I wanted to know if anyone out there uses a touch for working with GPS files or maps?

Using a PDA

If your using a PDA for working with GPS files or maps, why not use one with a GPS and windows CE?

Just thought I would ask, otherwise just use your Mac-en-toosh desktop or laptop.

Using Android Based GPS.The above post and my sig reflects my own opinions, expressed for the purpose of informing or inspiring, not commanding. Naturally, you are free to reject or embrace whatever you read.

I don't think so. You would

I don't think so. You would prob need to use a wireless connection which most likely will not be available while driving.

IPhone

Iphone has an app, for traffic.
I think it is a web driven program however.
Definitely not a GPSr.

IPod Touch

The nut of the question is if I use the touch to plot a route then can I export it into my Garmin? I know that I can use Map Source but that takes a computer and map source doesn't work on a Mac.

.

The answer to that question is no. You can't export a route from Google Maps on an iPod Touch.

And neither the c330 nor the nuvi 250w support stored routes.

Turn by Turn on I-Phone

I believe it is around June 12th or 18th. I-phone will have the turn by turn capabilities built in their new platform, but the good news is that those with the regular 3G will be able to download the software for free.and yes it is touch screen capable
The drawback is that you have to pay for a monthly data plan with the I-Phone.
I have an I-Phone for various reasons, but I would not give up my Garmin 885t for anything.
They both have their purposes that greatly assist daily.

iPod Touch

You can use Google Maps on the iPod Touch if you are connected to a WiFi hotspot, but I really don't think there is a useful way to export a route from the iPod as its basic interface to a PC or Mac is via iTunes.

Its ability to locate itself is based on WiFi connections and that is real iffy. This is different from the way it is implemented on the iPhone.

A Netbook which is smaller and less expensive than a Laptop would be a workable alternative. You could connect to Google Maps to send a Waypoint to your GPSr via the USB connection and you could also install MapSource on the Netbook.

Just saw this over on the Tom Tom page

I guess I asked too soon. Too bad Tom Tom took the lead first.

that Garmin may do something similar...

GPS apps may only run on iPhone

Developers can limit app function to iPhones if it needs GPSr to function. If you have an iPod Touch be sure to read the Requirements info on the iTunes App Store before purchasing. Be sure it says that it will work on an iPod Touch.

Have to wait and see

I wouldn't get too excited yet. We don't know what the cost will be for the application or how good it will work. Will it eat up all my time on the data plan? How good will the satilite pick up be?

The more you cram into one device the more problems you seem to get.

I like my nuvi and would not want to add a GPS function to the IPod.

All in Wonder

It is nice to see an attempt to do an "all in one". It always means compromise and they never seem to get it right. It also means that you can have a lot invested in one item that would crush you if it got lost or stolen. Imagine a iphone GPS with all you email contacts, documents, GPS routes, video, photos and music! That would make anyone cry if it was lifted.

Are you from England?

Hello Bob, Question; are you from England?
When you used the word lifted, it reminded me of the years I spent in good ol' London Town.

Nope

I'm from Canada but since I have a British Sports Car it is hard not to adopt the lingo. Boot, Tyres, bonnet, petrol...etc.

TomTom Car Kit Does NOT Work With iPod Touch/iPhone 2G

http://www.i4u.com/article27938.html

Bad news, iPod touch users and owners of a first generation iPhone; the TomTom car kit will not work with your gadgets. AppleInsider has received direct confirmation from TomTom that neither product is compatible with the car kit. Both gadgets can handle the app, but for whatever reason the car kit is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The TomTom car kit offers a better GPS and higher quality audio, in addition to acting as a dock.
Earlier reports had suggested that the oldest version of the iPhone or the touch might possibly be compatible with the kit. This news should put an end to those discussions. The $119.95 TomTom car kit was originally set to launch this summer, and was recently delayed until October. Considering the fact that it is now Oct 28th, they could end up missing that date too. It sounds to me like the TomTom team has encountered some difficulties with their car kit. The spate of delays, and the fact that we're only hearing about these incompatibility issues now makes me think something might be awry. Perhaps they tried to make it touch/2G compatible initially, only to run into insurmountable difficulties? If that is the case, I doubt we'll ever know.

.

Has anyone used the TomTom kit with their latest iPod Touch? I'm wondering if I can give this kit + app as a gift rather than a new GPS. I wonder if you can load custom POIs to the iPod...
