City navigator North American NT Download Version

Hello! This will be my first post to this forum, and hopefully you all can offer some insight.

I recently purchased the City navigator North America NT download version from the Garmin website. I did this because that way I could get more timely updates then I had been getting with an older version.

Every time I try and install the product onto my Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx, the download freezes, and I get logged out of the Garmin website. I have the right memory card, and the website won't let me install the software to the computer itself, only the 60CSx.

Has anyone had a similar problem or have some helpful advice? I've tried working with Garmin support, but they offer suggestions that usually don't work, but only after I spend 3 hours figuring out they don't work.

Should I ask for a refund and get the DVD or microsd card?

I'm losing my mind over this, and I'd really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

It's a new install. I had the city navigator v8 but decided to buy the nt version because the updates are more frequent and that's the one lifetime update works for. I'm just frustrated. Stupid question but if I get the dvd does the lifetime update still work?

I'll keep harassing them and report back.

Just to be sure...

Just to be sure, you bought the full 2010 City Navigator NA NT DVD, and not the City Navigator NT update DVD, right? It's possible/probable? that the NT Update DVD will not update the older non-NT version on your 60Csx now.

I'm not sure what you're asking about the lifetime map. If you ever get the current one-time NT version installed, you certainly should be able to buy the lifetime map subscription later and have it work.

I bought the full version

I bought the full version for sure. I talked to them and they said they'd look into it, but no reply in 5 days, so I'm going to try it again and if it doesn't work get a refund and the DVD.

just call tech support

Just call software technical support at Garmin, it's the easiest and best way to solve this problem.

I've reread your original post and have a couple questions:

-Is the problem completing the download or is it running the downloaded file to install the map?

-The download (for the map Update, the full map might even be bigger) is over 2GB and will take about 2 hours on a broadband connection. If you're having issues completing the download, check the following--first, delete previous download attempts in case they're corrupted; second, is there any possibility that your PC is set to drop an internet connection after x-min of inactivity or even have the computer turn off the hard drives or go to sleep in case of inactivity? I've seen cases where during a long download, the computer will fail to recognize that work is being done. A quick one-time fix is to press a Ctrl or Shift key on the keyboard every now and then to remind the computer to stay on. Whatever else occurs, remember that with this map, if the file downloaded is less than 2GB, it is not the complete file and you are doomed until this can be remedied.

-On the other hand, if your download was successful and the issue you're having is with the running and installation of the map to your GPS and computer, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First, the downloaded file is big so when you start running the .exe file to start the installation, it may appear for a good minute or so that nothing is happening. Avoid the urge to "do something" and wait and see if the installation will begin. I think it may be possible that real-time virus scanning software or security suite programs may delay this process even further since it needs to check the large file before allowing it to run. Second, the installation needs the GPS to be connected to the PC and turned on during the installation and you need a live internet connection to validate the installation of the map to one GPS. Third, what operating system are you using? I found that with MS Vista Home Premium, my installation wouldn't start until I turned off Vista's UAC (User Account Control). After completing the installation, I re-enabled UAC on my Vista PC. I'm not sure if my PC's UAC prevented the installation of my map upgrade or if it slowed down the start of the installation to the point that I thought my computer wasn't responding anymore.

Hmm, I've said too much so I'll stop now. If any of this makes sense, it may help guide you to the issue that's causing your grief. Good luck.

The problem isn't with the

The problem isn't with the download, but with the installation. Unfortunately, there is no exe file to download. It does it all through the website! This means that it takes about 3 hours to test any suggestions, further adding to the difficulty. Its been going on for a few weeks now, so i'm just going to get them to give me a refund and get the cd. This is just ridiculous.

Did you try to Install it

Did you try to Install it with MapSource onto your PC and Install it that way? It works fine on my 60CSx.

This is how I fixed the problem.

I have and etrex vista hcx handheld with an additional micro sd card. I plugged the micro sd card directly into my computer card reader. I then formatted the card to wipe it clean. I proceeded to download the program to the card directly. To do this you have to have the GPS plugged in but then there is an option that says idea "looking for more options?" idea above the continue button on the website after it identifies the GPS device plugged in. I clicked on that and pulled up my micro sd card. I then downloaded the maps City Nav North America Nt to the card directly in my card reader, not in my GPS. After download to the card. I put the card into my Garmin, changed the interface setting under settings to Mass Storage and then turned my Garmin off then on again by holding the power button. it then loaded the maps up and told me about the maps and I was all set. I'm not sure if setting the device to mass storage and then turning it off then on actually does anything, but I know that I did it and now it works. My wife has been trying for over a week now to get the maps up and running and I made her mad when i sat down tonight and did it on the first shot in 30 mins. That includeds the download time. Give it a shot.
Again, don't put your sd card in your gps until you have downloaded the program to it directly. After download is complete make sure GPS decive is plugged into the computer, then put the card into the gps, set the interface setting under settings to mass storage and then hold down the power button until the garmin welcome screen comes up.

The Lifetime update works

The Lifetime update works ONLY with the full DVD. It does not work with the download or SC card versions.
