garmin map update problem

Does anybody know how to change a garmin nuvi 660 from the north west area to the north east area? I updated my map and the gps did not give me the option to choose my location, it defaulted to the north west. It normally would not be a problem but I live in NJ and NJ is not in the north west map file. Go figure.

NJ

Seems like a good excuse to move from NJ

New jersey is not that bad once you take out the bad drivers. And change the road signs from after the turn to before the turn.

I think you should move to New York.

Try using mapsource

You should be able to use Mapsource to load the NE region if that is the problem.

If you had a lot stored on the Nuvi in the way of POI and MP3 files, it may not have had enough room to load the complete update. Delete all the extra files and try reloading. The 2010 map update is quite a bit larger than the earlier versions.

The answer to dealing with those NJ drivers is to drive in Manhattan, NY for a few days; your defensive driving skills would increase immensely.

I remember the days before I had a portable GPS and tried to drive in NJ... I got so lost because of those turns before the turns. I still hate them but they're bearable because the GPS tells me to exit.

My update experience

First, I'll say that the install process did complete and my Nuvi works fine with the new forever maps. However, it is a grueling, time-consuming, sometimes confusing process. Mine took more than 3-1/2 hours to complete with confusing pop-ups that once remediated, took so long to execute that I wasn't sure anything was even happening. But the installation software seems to have ignored any erroneous mouse clicks that I may have made and did what it was suppose to do. I allotted more than 3 hours at work while I did other things, but ended up having to let it complete while driving home (performed on a laptop – the last step being the download to the Nuvi itself where an Internet connection wasn’t needed).

Garmin doesn’t need to restrict us to only 4 downloads per year, I don’t have the time to waste to do it any more than once or twice.

But as I said, it works.

Me too, and that's why I won't replace my 760 with anything newer (and buggier).
