leaning toward a garmin nuvi 765t.. anyone care to say 'wait'?

760 may cost half as much. lets say gpsmagazine's website is pushing me toward the 765t. im looking to get that free traffic and supposedly barely noticable free traffic.

is 765t compatible with msn? do you guys recommend it?

im looking to get that bean bag as well and that complicated travel/protective case made for the 780s because its supposed to have better cushion and grip for protecting it (Ive experienced having it be slippery on the regular one)

Keep in mind you can get lifetime traffic for the 760 for $60.

I like the 765T better. I nearly bought one yesterday. I can't decide on the 765T at Sam's Club for $397 or an 855 at Costco for $299. I've used both the 765T and the 760 and I really like the upcoming turn arrow on the 765T. It's easier for me to just glance at the screen and see what's coming up. The lane assist is very helpful at times. There's one interchange in LA that always tricks me not matter how many times I drive it.

Traffic doesn't matter to me since there are so many traffic radio updates here...every 5 minutes.

I vote for the 765T.

Personally, I have had the 765T and with all of it's issues, I would go with the 855 at $299.

Would still recommend the 765t

I bought two 765t's last Christmas, one for me & one for mine wife. Since then, we've both been very happy with them ...but, I'm on my 3rd unit now: the first suffered from a bad touchscreen, the second lost all of its POI/street/address information after a software update, which brings me to my current unit which seems fine. My wife's has had little trouble except for losing her POI/street/address information after the same software update. I haven't addressed that problem yet but I will soon.

With the above disclaimer in place let me end by saying we love the features, ease of use, free traffic (although not real reliable) & most of all, not being lost.

We bought one Garmin beanbag mount (the old design), which my wife uses. I've used it on a few trips up north & found it to slide a bit. I use the suction cup mount to my windshield in my car.

I would go with the 765T

I have had quite the ride with Garmin. I think I am on my 6th unit (first was a 265WT that I returned to Amazon because of touchscreen issues--I then was able to get a 765T for $50 more than I paid for the 265WT, based on a sale held by ABT Electronics at the time). My first three 765Ts had bad touchscreens. After receiving the third one, I complained to Garmin that the touchscreen on the 765T, one of Garmin's flagship models was unacceptable. I asked if there were any way that I could send in my third defective 765T and receive an 855 in its place. To my surprise (and do to company policy changes I do not think they would do this again), they honored my request. When I got my 855T I was pretty disappointed. Yes, it has voice recognition and the new interface, but it was extremely sluggish. I could not get over the fact that it seemed to operate at a snail's pace compared to the 765T. So, I returned it and asked if there were any way that I could have a 765T back. They once again honored my request. I tip my hat to the way Garmin's customer service used to take care of their customers. My fourth 765T (and sixth Garmin overall) is a keeper. It still registers mis-touches every now and again. But I can live with it.

I would go with the 765T, unless voice recognition (coupled with what seemed to be a slower processor) is absolutely required.

Bluetooth is much worse on the 765 than on the 760. Garmin changed the BT chipset (old: Parrot, new: Texas Instruments) on the newer units and compatibility has suffered. The same phone that paired with all of it's features working fine with my 760 has flaky phone book transfer as well as voice dial that works only 20% of the time with the 765.

And that's not to mention the sound quality of the phone over the nuvi. Volume levels are inadequate with echo being transmitted from the nuvi side. The external mic may help a bit.

It's been said quite often...rather than annoy yourself and the people you call with the 765's BT, just spend $20 on a BT headset and don't even bother with the nuvi's BT.

Some users may have had better luck though. Sometimes, the only way to find out is to actually try it with the phone you'll be using.

i'm happy with my 765t. the traffic receiver hasn't helped me any in los angeles..there's traffic all the time. it does have funny routes sometimes, making me travel further to reach the freeway. this is also my first gps, so i don't have any comparisons to make with any others. i bought it for $406 (tax free and free shipping) off amazon, but i think it is raised to $420 now. i bought a vent adapter to mount the gps, works great and keeps my vision clear for the road.
also i never noticed any problems with bluetooth. it works fine with my tmobile g1. detects it right away on start up.

I bought me a 765T recently. Read and read tonnes of reviews and comments and still went for it rather than 785T. I did not seriously consider the 885 unit because of its voice recognition. No voice recognition software recognizes my voice, so it is useless on a Nuvi; it would only aggravate me. The 765 is okay, not perfect, but I consider it an upgrade over the 680 I had before now, although I miss certain things on the 680. The BT is okay, I could never get the 680 to read my phone contact list (I had to manually enter the contacts and every time it lost connection, I had to enter the contacts manually again, until I got tired of doing that because it was rather frequent) The 765 reads my contact list; it has not dropped once and I much prefer it to the 680's BT. Anyway, I am not driving for many hours on the road for the BT to matter that much. I am in a State where it is illegal to use cell phones while driving (unless hands-free).
Other receivers all have their issues but the 765 seems to do it for me, for now.

765t vs. 885t

Had a 760 that was stolen out of my vehicle five weeks ago, so I did some research and got the 885T
Can't stop singing the praises about it!
Love It! Love It! Love It!
It pairs so well with my I-Phone, pulls in everything from the phone and my personal genie is at my command.
I only hear a sad voice when I say "Cancel Route!"

If you own a 760 and are buying a 765t just for the free traffic you can get lifetime traffic for $60 and have a more feature filled unit.

I have a 760 and was drawn in by the lane assist and other minor tweaks to the display too and contemplated getting the 765T. After reading the multiple complaints and that Garmin had to remove the displaying of the upcoming street names due to competitor infringement (one feature I really like) I decided to keep my 760 and wait and purchased the lifetime maps in addition to the lifetime traffic. This was especially true after reading the now stripped out features of the new 12xx and 13xx series. I was so disappointed to see that Garmin is removing features instead of adding new ones.

One can only hope that the generation of units after the 12 & 13xx series will take a step towards adding features.

Stay away from the 765T

I bought this device in May before my vacation in NYC. I had the Garmin 600, which I really like. To make a long story short, here are some flaws found in the 765T:
- slow (especially when recalculating)
- routing sometime does NOT make sense (read the one star reviews from Amazon)
- traffic assist useless
- It crashes!!!! Yep, it does.
- 3D building view, useless
- It is too expensive for what it offers (paid $425.00 then)

Good features:
- Bluetooth, works as decribed.
- lane assist, good.
- Multi-destination in one route, cool.
- displays the speed limit, Useful.

My battery life was so short that I sent it back fo repair. I added a note about all these issues.
Dude, now you know.

Maybe I am just lucky. I

Maybe I am just lucky. I got a 765T a few months ago and have not had a single issue.

The only quirk in routing I have noticed is that it does not like to take you away from your destination even if it is faster. The nearest entrance to the freeway for me requires you to backtrack a bit but it is twice as fast due to the traffic going the suggested way. It quickly figures out what I want to do and adjusts accordingly.

I will vote for the 765T

Bought one in May, and other than the lock-up, which I read about on POI-Factory, and was able to avoid by downloading the latest firmware before I acquired the first sattellite, I am very pleased with it. Touch screen is sometimes quirky, and some self-loaded POI files take a long time to load. Overall, I would give it a 8 3/4 out of 10.

Any updates

Korndogg,

Now that a few months have gone by, how do youo like your 765t?

I also purchased one back in May. Yes it has poor battery life (less than 1hr) and true, the touch screen in some occasions will not select the number you pressed, and my Palm Pre will not sync via Bluetooth, but overall, it does its job well.

deliws : After you sent it

deliws : After you sent it back, was your battery life improved? I love my 765T, other than the ridiculously short battery life. If they can fix it, I'll send it in for repairs. If the difference isn't much, I'll just live with it.

Get Garmin or Get Lost

Like my 765T purchased in August 09

Traffic hasn't helped much and it does guide me on some rather crazy side roads once in a while but the lane assist is great and when it shows up junction view is nice although as others have stated it sometimes is a quick flash on the screen.
Like the sceen size versus the street pilot 550 and nuvi 360 and hopfully the next update will improve routing. Have had no issues that required sending back to garmin

I sent my 765 back because of short batt life, they had it only a few days, got the same unit back & get a few hours out of a charge since. I'm not positive exactly how long it lasts now, as I don't often use it without the base, but when I have, I've yet to get the low battery warning. Very happy.

If you can't get your battery issues fixed then it might be worth looking at the Gomadic line of accessories. I recently used a number of them on a European trip, e.g. the wall charger, the AA battery pack and the Li-Ion pack, and all worked as advertised. The Li-Ion pack kept it going on an 11 hour flight so I now have a nice, fast trans-Atlantic track in my track history. smile Also used that and the battery pack in pedestrian mode when required, and that worked as advertised also. One advantage of the Gomadic tips is they allow GPS use while charging, which is not necessarily true of all battery extenders. However you do require a separate tip for syncing. This is apparently due to the Garmin circuitry.

Garmin 765T

I too have run the gamut. I started with the 255T and upgraded to the 265WT because of bluetooth capability. I then upgraded to the 765T but the 3-D was a joke and the lane assist does not function in Knoxville, TN. I upgraded to the 1390T and again the lane assist does not function. I upgraded to the 1690 only to discover that traffic does not function in Knoxville and neither does the lane assist, so I went back to the 1390T and figured I would rather have the traffic as opposed to the lane assist. Garmin tech support said that they may add the lanes assist in a few moths. As the old saying goes, "You can't have your cake and eat it, too." I also tried the Magellan 4770 only to discover the lane assist is great but they don't offer traffic in Knoxville. WHAT A RIDE. I'm sticking to the 1390T

Bluetooth

The short time I had the 765T the bluetooth performed flawlessly after I got the phone paired. It took three tries but finally paired.

765T Experience

I purchased the 765T last October and after about a months use, it would just die when calculating a route. Reboot it and it would try again and die. If it was just in map view setting without directions etc., it would work fine. Exchanged it at Sam's and so far the new 765T is performing very well. None of the other problems others are having. But.....its only a week old now so time will tell.

In addition the 765T will give you lane assist, junction view, 3d building view, ability to create, and sort routes, Garmin Locate, MP3 player, Audible Book player, FM transmitter, and a headphone/audio out jack. None of which are on the 265WT. See:

This isn't really a fair fight, IMO, as the 765 is a superior unit in all respects. The only thing that the 265 wins is price.

Dunno about 760. I do know 265W 755t and 765t. It's all an "option" related thing mostly. What do you need and what wouldn't you mind having. Then look for the best price. Life time Maps? depends on how long you want to keep the unit. Lifetime traffic? Does where you live support NAVTEQ Traffic, look it up http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic/. I have no issues with holding the 765T, none of the 7x5's for that matter. Haven't had it drop out of my hands yet.
Screen protector? I would advise against using one on the 7x5 series, you might find it interferes with the touch screen icons. If it comes with it by all means try it. In my opinion the 765t is still the best unit out there atm. smile

For me though, FM transmitter doesn't work with our rear-window-antenna Odyssey..
.. Love Lane Assist.
.. Love Junction View, although it's area-specific but updated with maps.
.. Mp3 allows 'speaking' pois (TourGuides)
.. Bluetooth works well enough, but with varying degrees of features & 'glitches' according to your phone model.

I already have a 765T and looking at the specs for the 2360LT/LMT, I am not inclined to switch. While I could live without the MP3 option, the device has no option for alternate audio output. There is no FM transmitter OR audio out jack. At least one of those options would help with the usually tinny sounding speaker. The funny thing is the stock audio output on my C550 is better than my 765T. The C550 has two little good sounding speakers that play stereo output. The 765T has a rather underpowered little speaker, which is understandable considering its size. However, I can get around that with the FM transmitter or audio out jack. These newer device have no audio out options.
