longitude and latitude Major Locations

Was wondering, Is there a easy was to break down some of the poi files..

What I am trying to do is not have some of the files so big since I wont need all the areas, I am looking for just New York area and surrounding states. That will make all the files smaller.

However, I am not sure what the longitude and latitude would be.

I think it is around 40.xx and -73.xx but not sure, and I am sure I would like to get some alittle farther out.

I know how to use Excel and can sort the files with no problem, I just dont know what I want to keep and what to remove,

Anyone has any ideas?!?

Finding Long and Lat for major cities

You can use Google Earth to locate any area and then you can superimpose the longitude and latitude lines. From that view it should be easy to determine your upper and lower cutoffs of data in Excel.

Set Google earth options to display in decimal degrees. For example, if you are in the NY area and want to bound by
the Connecticut,Massachusetts border on the north, the latitude is 42.0 degrees.
Philadelphia on the sourth is 40.0 degrees

Therefore, sort your data in excel by latitude (column B) and delete any entries above 42 and below 40.

On the East, the tip of Long Island is longitude -71.75
On the West, the western edge of Northern NJ is -75.25.

Now, re-sort the remaining data by longitude (column A) and delete anything less than -75.25 in column A and more than -71.75.

Hope this helps.
